摘要:
Prepared at the request of the AAPT Committee on Resource Letters. This is one of a series of Resource Letters on different topics, intended to guide college physicists to some of the literature and other teaching aids that may help them improve course contents in specified fields of physics. No Resource Letter is meant to be exhaustive and complete; in time there may be more than one letter on some of the main subjects of interest. Comments and suggestions concerning the content and arrangement of letters as well as suggestions for future topics will be welcomed. Please send such communications to Professor Arthur Quinton, Chairman, Resource Letter Committee, Department of Physics, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Massachusetts 01002 (current address until Fall of 1978: Prof. Arthur Quinton, Department of Nuclear Physics, Australian National University, Box 4 P.O., Canberra ACT, Australia 2600).

摘要:
A description is given of a laboratory program suitable for a course in physics for nonscience majors. The laboratories are designed around two approaches: the basic concepts of modern physics and the physics of urban and environmental problems. Sample topics include the physics of music, art, transportation, pollution, and atomic power.

摘要:
In January 1969, Kansas State University joined with six non-Ph.D. granting institutions to form the Consortium for the Advancement of Physics Education (CAPE). CAPE has conducted a number of programs, supported mainly by an NSF COSIP-B grant. These programs include junior-senior student symposia, senior honors research projects, junior-senior summer research assistantships, faculty summer research fellowships, and a faculty symposium on physical science teaching. In this paper we criticize the various programs on the basis of our three years of experience with CAPE, indicating the activities that appear to have been successful and to he worthy of trial in other regions, and also indicating certain activities that were less successful than we had originally hoped. We attempt to give reasons for the latter disappointments.

摘要:
A seminar course based on the science used in selected science-fiction stories is described. The format of the course consists of reading stories and then discussing the physics (e.g., antimatter, relativity) which serves as the scientific background for the story. A partial list of books read, together with the background theme and appropriate references, is given. The student reaction to the course is enthusiastic.

摘要:
We live in a technological era of accelerating change, increasing pressures, and diminishing resources. If science and technology are to be useful in the solution of social problems, then scientists and engineers must participate in public discussions and in the decision-making process. To do so they must match their scientific understanding with appreciation of the economic, political, and social aspects of problems. Then they must become involved with federal, state, and local officials who will be making decisions. They must do this in the context not of the scientist, hut of the officials. This communication process is neither easy nor familiar to the scientist. It involves mutual education. Degree of success and time of effect should not be judged on scientific grounds, but rather on those of social adaptation. Patience, persistence, and breadth of view are even more necessary than deep sophistication. A list is given of things that professionals and/or professional societies can do. Development of a base of public understanding, an important kind of general education, is a prerequisite for political action.

摘要:
The problem of observing a collision between two spaceships is utilized to illustrate the misuse of time dilation and length contraction, and the incorrect description of space-time coordinates in special relativity. By emphasizing the equivalence of all inertial frames, students can be guided to correct descriptions of space-time coordinates and to proper applications of time dilation and length contraction.

摘要:
By letting water drops fall through rings into cans, high voltage can be spontaneously generated with no external electrical excitation. Previous work concerning this type of electric influence machine for dc and three-phase ac high voltage generation is extended to include multiphase, multifrequency operation by considering N streams and N cans. A distributed equivalent circuit representation is used to calculate the natural frequencies of the system, where it is found that many overstable modes are present. Experimental observations with up to five cans are presented. This device can serve as a model for phenomena concerned with atmospheric electricity.

摘要:
A simple demonstration model MHD generator has been developed using readily available toy rocket motors as a power source. Both the open-circuit voltage (several volts) and the short-circuit current (several milliamperes) can be predicted, giving students an excellent insight into the properties of this new power system.

摘要:
It is illustrated that the propagation of disturbances in nonuniform media can often be treated in terms of a differential equation in wavenumber space. The technique is illustrated by means of the one-dimensional wave equation.
