摘要:
In a course entitled ’’Revolutions in Physics’’ a number of episodes in the history of physics are examined, in order to test the theories of Kuhn, Popper, Lakatos, and others, with regard to any common structure exhibited by the various revolutions that physics has undergone. The conflict between Lorentz’s Electron Theory and Einstein’s Special Relativity becomes a major focal point in the second half of the course for the models of scientific revolutions that are studied.

摘要:
A particle constrained to move in one dimension encounters a potentialV(x) on the interval 0?x?L. Question: canV(x) be deduced from a knowledge of the transit time as a function of energy? The answer is no, although a unique ’’canonical’’ potential is determined, and we show how to find it.

摘要:
The experiment described herein makes use of a number of concepts from geometrical optics including definition of the focal length of a thin lens, reflection by a plane mirror, thin lenses in contact, and the lens maker’s equation. The experiment requires very inexpensive components and is suitable for students in elementary college physics classes.

摘要:
Students generally acquire an understanding of theoretical concepts only after they have attempted actual calculations based on those concepts. Consequently there is a need for realistic calculations in quantum theory which can be used with undergraduates to illustrate its important concepts. In this paper we describe a self‐consistent‐field–linear combination of atomic ortibals–molecular orbital calculation on the valence electrons of LiH using the method of Roothaan. The calculation is modest in scope, mathematically simple, and easy to program. These factors enhance its usefullness with undergraduates.

摘要:
The condition of equilibrium molecular dissociation is investigated without using thermodynamic reasoning explicitly. The approach of ’’phase‐space maximization’’ illuminates the basic principles of statistical mechanics while providing an understanding of an equation which is useful in many applications.

摘要:
Several interesting laboratory experiments in acoustics can be built around a sound analyzer and a storage oscilloscope. The Tektronix 5L4N Spectrum Analyzer has been used for several experiments in a course entitled ’’The Physics of Music and Speech,’’ as well as for undergraduate research projects and some projects carried out in cooperation with local high schools. The experiments described involve the analysis of speech and musical instrument sounds and the general analysis of the frequency range of complex sounds.

摘要:
Gauge invariance in both quantum and classical mechanics is investigated using the Feynman path integral formulation of quantum mechanics. The Feynman path integral expresses the wave function in terms of the Lagrangian. A gauge transformation in classical mechanics is the addition of a total derivative of a gauge function to the Lagrangian. A gauge transformation of the second and first kind in quantum mechanics is obtained by adding and subtracting, respectively, a total derivative to the Lagrangian in the Feynman path integral.
