摘要:
The fact that the wave function of a quantum system may not return to its original phase after its parameters are cycled around a circuit is now well known. The resultant change in phase, known as the geometric phase, has its analog in optics. This paper describes a simple interferometric arrangement that provides a direct demonstration of the geometric phase.

Pathologies of quantum Hamiltonians are reflected in their classical counterparts and in the solution of the associated classical dynamics. This property permits one, on the one hand, to appreciate the role of certain technical requirements acceptable quantum Hamiltonians must satisfy, and, on the other hand, enables one to recognize potentially troublesome quantum systems merely by examining the classical systems.

摘要:
A comparison of Turkish and U.S. statistics shows that women in Turkey earn a much larger percentage of physics degrees at all levels than do women in the United States. The Turkish educational system is structured so that female students take the same mathematics and science courses at the same level of skill in high school as do male students. This common background is followed by much greater success for Turkish women university students in all areas of science and engineering.

摘要:
An integrable classical two‐spin system is considered with characteristics which are particularly suited for elucidating the properties of integrable systems with two degrees of freedom. The foliation of phase space by the rational and irrational tori is shown with projections onto a particular phase space plane, an expression for the winding number is obtained, and the dense coverage of the irrational tori by the quasiperiodic trajectories is easily demonstrated for this system.

摘要:
The visual distortion effects visible to an observer traveling around and descending to the surface of an extremely compact star are described. Specifically, trips to a ‘‘normal’’ neutron star, a black hole, and an ultracompact neutron star with extremely high surface gravity, are described. Concepts such as multiple imaging, red‐ and blue‐shifting, conservation of surface brightness, the photon sphere, and the existence of multiple Einstein rings are discussed in terms of what the viewer would see. Computer generated, general relativistically accurate illustrations highlighting the distortion effects are presented and discussed. A short movie (VHS) depicting many of these effects is available to those interested free of charge.

摘要:
The construction of a simple spectroscope is described, using a box with an adjustable slit, a holographic grating, and a wavelength calibrated strip. The grating spacing is calculated to have enough resolving power to allow the Fraunhofer lines in the solar spectrum to be observed by the naked eye. Furthermore, the calibration strip allows the user to determine the wavelengths of the spectral lines. While not having the accuracy and the resolving power of more elaborate instruments, the spectroscope’s inexpensiveness and simple operation will make it a useful instrument in a classroom environment.
