摘要:
The sport of drag racing can be very usefully examined in an introductory mechanics course. The concepts of energy, momentum, acceleration, velocity, torque, and power are all involved in the analysis of the problem. Many students find the problem to be very contemporary and close to their own experience. High interest among the students usually results in increased understanding of the physical principles involved.

摘要:
We describe an advanced laboratory experiment in which both Raman-Nath and Bragg diffraction of light by acoustic waves in water are observed in the sound frequency range from 5 to 45 MHz. The apparatus consists of a laser, light detector, rf power source, quartz transducer, and homemade water cell. We discuss the theory of Raman-Nath diffraction, Bragg diffraction, and the criteria for the manifestation of each. The measured Raman-Nath diffracted orders give a visual display of FM sidebands. We discuss a quantitative relationship between the incident and diffracted light and the sound for Bragg diffraction in terms of a three-wave parametric process. Stanford students in the Advanced Applied Physics Laboratory have successfully performed this experiment during the past three years.

摘要:
In this article we try to relate the general features of several types of heat capacity curves to the underlying energy level spectrum. We are interested in heat capacity “anomalies” (i.e., heat capacities which occur in addition to the usual lattice vibration and conduction electron contributions) and restrict ourselves to systems which can be described on an independent particle basis. We begin by considering Schottky anomalies and show the effects on the heat capacity of varying the spacings and degeneracies of the energy levels. The relation between the Schottky anomaly arising from the equally spaced nondegenerate levels of the Brillouin function and the heat capacity of the Einstein function is discussed. The effects on the heat capacity of a marked local change in the density of states of an otherwise uniform energy-level spectrum is considered. The heat capacities of the free rotor and the molecular field model are used to exemplify particular points of the discussion.

摘要:
The general thermodynamic structure of equations of state is discussed. It is pointed out that empirical equations of state always involve a double set of assumptions. A recipe for producing thermodynamically consistent empirical equations of state is presented and is illustrated in the step-by-step production of yet another equation of state.

摘要:
We describe a simplification of Jean Perrin's classic experiment to determine Boltzmann's constant from the sedimentation equilibrium of colloidal suspensions. Perrin's complicated procedure for preparing suitable colloidal particles is avoided by using commercially available plastic spheres of specified diameter and density. The experiment is suitable for either an introductory or advanced laboratory.

摘要:
The ratio of electronic charge to Boltzmann's constant can be easily determined by measuring the short-circuit collector current versus the emitter-base voltage characteristics of a silicon transistor connected in the common-base mode. The incorporation of this experiment in the introductory physics laboratory is recommended.

摘要:
An acoustic interferometer provides an inexpensive means for making precise studies of the kinetics of gas molecules. Two experiments are described: (1) Measurement of the vibrational relaxation time of gas molecules and (2) determination of intermolecular (van der Waals) forces in molecules.

摘要:
The performance of carbon dioxide-supported pucks which have been used in the freshman laboratories of the physics department of the University of Calgary for several years is described. The theory of W. M. Whitney regarding air supported pucks is commented on and is compared with that of Deuker and Wojtech and their experimental measurements. The principle of floating stability is commented on and a criterion for a stable design given.

摘要:
This paper is a report on the development of a survey course in modern physics for upper division liberal arts students. This course emphasizes the conceptual and philosophical basis of modern physics. The method of teaching leans heavily on modern visual aids and lecture demonstrations.
