摘要:
A large class of problems in statistical physics is very simple when treated by means of the chemical potential. In this paper the chemical potential is applied to eight problems of physical interest, with particular emphasis on solid-state physics. The method could profitably be emphasized in junior or senior courses in statistical physics.

摘要:
It is shown that the apparent infinite propagation velocity in heat conduction is the result of neglecting the atomistic structure of matter. A modified differential equation is derived which gives a finite speed of propagation.

摘要:
Experiments have been designed for the measurement of the magnetoresistance of a normal metal and of the critical field dependence of a superconductor. The equipment is relatively cheap and simple to construct and operate, and the experiments yield accurate results in times short enough for inclusion in an undergraduate laboratory class.

摘要:
A simple piece of inexpensive apparatus is described with which experiments may be done between 2° and 300°K directly in a liquid-helium storage Dewar. The apparatus is suitable for use by undergraduates, and an experiment to determine the temperature dependence of resistance and the superconducting transition temperature of tin is described.

摘要:
The three-dimensional wave equation for waves propagating in inhomogeneous warm compressible plasma with an imposed arbitrary inhomogeneous static magnetic field is derived from the macroscopic linearized equations, of the single-fluid continuum-theory plasma dynamics. Particular cases are discussed and compared with previous results.

摘要:
Airplanes in supersonic flight along curved paths produce, on the concave side of the path, shock waves that converge to a focus or else form cusps. At these places especially intense sonic booms occur. Since shock waves in air are invisible, a visual demonstration of their behavior may be of interest. The logarithmic spiral that an airplane in supersonic flight must follow to produce a shock wave converging at a given point on the ground was scaled to dimensions suitable for producing analogous surface waves on water in a ripple tank. An apparatus was built to move the wave-generating stylus along the spiral path at the proper speed. Prints of successive frames of motion pictures of the resulting wave are shown. The application of this technique to demonstrate shock waves produced by other curved paths is discussed.

摘要:
In the NSF Secondary Summer Institute Program, the number of physics institutes supported and the percentage of physics proposals funded is less than for other disciplines. Reasons for this situation and some suggestions for remedying it are set forth.
