摘要:
The author recently audited all of the courses taken by first and second year medical students at the University of Minnesota. On the basis of that experience, he recommends physics topics which those students will find useful, such as the Boltzmann factor, diffusion and osmosis, Thevenin’s theorem, nerve conduction, a detailed discussion of the electrocardiogram, relaxation oscillators, feedback, Fourier series, correlation functions, and power spectra. In addition, examples are given of applications of physical principles from each of the major areas of physics.

摘要:
Applied physics courses at the intermediate undergraduate level can meet the increased technological need in a number of professional areas. The course in physical principles of instrumentation described in this article was designed to broaden medical technologists’ understanding of their equipment, and serves as an example for developing similar courses applicable in other areas.

摘要:
We give an account of topics suitable for a model course in traditional Chinese science. A preliminary discussion examines problems in the study of non−Western science generally. An understanding of the indigenous Chinese view of nature requires an exposition of the development of natural philosophy from its Taoist and Naturalist origins to its culmination in the Neo−Confucian synthesis during the Sung dynasty. The central idea that emerges is the concept of a unified, interrelated organism as a model of nature. This affected the specialized fields of science: we survey briefly mathematics and astronomy, but concentrate on physics, especially its strongest subfields, acoustics and magnetism. We try to present Chinese science as a coherent view of nature in its own right, but also compare it with Western science, and explore the influences of Chinese science on the evolution of Western science and on present−day world science. Extensive references for further study are presented throughout this report.

摘要:
Some elementary texts treat the derivation of the electron drift velocity in a very cavalier fashion. We show that by using simple ideas of probability theory the desired result can be obtained without invoking suspicious steps.

摘要:
The utility of inexpensive, piezoelectric−type phonograph cartridges in the undergraduate laboratory is pointed out. Typical voltage sensitivities of 7×104V/m and charge sensitivities of 2×10−5C/m, along with leakage resistance of the order of 1011ω and are reported, and corresponding implications for compatible electrical circuitry discussed. Two experiments using these cartridges in a ’’Physics of Music’’ laboratory are described.

摘要:
The non−relativistic energy spectrum for a negatively charged particle in the field of a spherically symmetric charge distribution is obtained. A complete solution is found which includes a representation of the wavefunction exterior to the charge distribution. The energy eigenvalues are found from the matching condition at the boundary of the nucleus and the energy levels for a mu meson in the field of a lead nucleus are calculated.

摘要:
A pedagogical example is presented in which the completeness of the free state wavefunctions of a Hamiltonian can be explicitly checked. For certain values of the potential strength the free states prove to be complete. For other values of the potential strength the free states are shown to be incomplete and the extent of this incompleteness is shown to consist of precisely one function. Using the fact that the totality of all energy eigenfunctions must be complete, this single bound state wavefunction is calculated using the free state wavefunctions only.

摘要:
A small air bubble in a liquid is observed as it slowly rises toward the surface under conditions such that the change in hydrostatic pressure with depth cannot be neglected. The equation of motion is found to be of the form predicted by a simple, laminar−flow model. Bubbles which rise faster move with a distinct oscillatory motion for which there is no simple explanation.
