摘要:
The growth in the number of ’’elementary’’ particles since the discovery of theJ/ψ in November of 1974 is reviewed. An attempt is made to combine references to initial discoveries, to reviews of theory and experiment, and to elementary discussions in a way that may be useful at a wide variety of levels. Accordingly references are marked E (Elementary), I (intermediate), and A (advanced). Articles selected for incorporation in a reprint volume (to be published separately by the American Association of Physics Teachers) are marked (‡). For a shorter list of particularly helpful elementary and intermediate references, the reader may consult those marked with an asterisk (*).

摘要:
General education students enrolled in courses in physics or physical science are ill‐served by an almost total lack of discussion of the intimate links between progress in science and ’’progress’’ in weapon systems. We discuss in detail the great dependence of the present arms race on a healthy physics enterprise and the pervasive connections between pure and applied science and military needs.

摘要:
Numerical estimates are carried out on questions affecting the nation’s nonproliferation policy. We have considered some aspects of thermal recycle, improved efficiency of light water reactors, advanced converters, light‐water reactor–fast breeder reactor economic tradeoffs, symbiotic systems, research reactors, laser isotope separation, and the thorium cycle.

摘要:
A simple method is described: to form on a large fixed screen the succession of the diffraction patterns on the different planes of the diffracted field, from the aperture to infinity. The method is based on the packing effect of a lens which images the entire diffracted field in a few centimeters. A theoretical analysis of the diffraction field in an image space is given, together with some illustrative pictures.

摘要:
Galileo is often claimed by scientists to be the first modern physicist, and because of his conflict with the Catholic Church is seen as a heroic figure fighting for the independence of pure science. Brecht, in his playGalileo, has presented a revisionist view of Galileo. This view developed over several versions of the play, and finally used him as a symbol for all scientists who reject social responsibility for their work. Is this revisionist view of Galileo any more distorted than the portrayal of him as the patron saint of modern science?

摘要:
The laboratory to accompany a one‐semester descriptive astronomy course has been redesigned. Standard topics are retained, but the orientation is changed to introduce the nonscience major to the work of the professional astronomer. Student needs are met by building the laboratory around a solid foundation of astronomical observation. Several semesters of use indicate good success as measured by increased enrollment and positive student feedback.

摘要:
A study unit on the Titius–Bode Law of planetary distances is described. Its format is based on a Piagetian learning cycle of exploration, conceptualization, and applications. More than enough material is provided, including options, for a variety of flexible, open‐ended student activities in an astronomy observatory section faced with a cloudy night. Portions of the unit guide and related ideas may serve as starting points for independent study projects and term papers. The unit is quantitative, employing both arithmetic and algebra; it emphasizes graphical analysis to induce empirical relations.
