摘要:
SYNOPSIS.A list is given of 67 named species ofLeucocytozoonconsidered valid at present. Another list is given of 1 reptilian and 146 avian hosts of named species ofLeucocytozoon. A 3rd list is given of 34 synonyms.Leucocytozoonhas been named from about 0.7% of the approximately 8600 species of birds that exist. The following new taxonomic names are included:L. danilewskyivar.hirundinisSergent&Sergent, 1905 is emended toL. hirundinis; Saurocytozoon tupinambiLainson&Shaw, 1969 is changed toLeucocytozoon (Saurocytozoon) tupinambi(Lainson&Shaw, 1969).

SYNOPSIS.The teiid lizardAmeiva ameiva praesignisin Panama is parasitized by 2 species ofPlasmodium: P. cnemidophoriCarini and P. diminutivum sp. n. The Panamanian strain ofP. cnemidophorihas thick macrogametocytes which are larger than the oval microgametocytes, and schizonts which contain 42–119 nuclei.P. diminutivumis characterized by round to oval gametocytes which are usually smaller than the host cell nucleus; fan‐shaped schizonts with 4–6 nuclei; and prominently vacuolated young stages, with a thick band of chromatin along the periphery of the va

In the course of these studies,Ctedoctema acanthocryptaStokes, 1884 was found to be a typical representative of this ciliate community. This species feeds on bacteria and reaches population peaks in the Spring and Fall. The diagnosis ofC. acanthocryptawas based hitherto on observations of living material. In the present report the diagnosis is rendered more complete by a description of the infra‐ciliature and consideration of ecolog

摘要:
SYNOPSIS.Hyalophysa Iwoffi sp. n. is described from the shrimp,Palaemonetes paludosus. Its life cycle is like that of other exuviotrophic apostomes.Hyalophysa Iwoffidiffers from the type species,H. chattoni, in the details of its infraciliature and the shape of its macronucleus during the trophont stage. Emended diagnoses of the genus,Hyalophysa, and the species,H. chattoni, also are given.

SYNOPSIS.Sphaeromyxa maiyai sp. n. (Myxosporidea: Myxiidae) is described from the gall bladder of the Pacific tomcodMicrogadus proximusGirard, from Newport, Oregon. The plasmodial stage is discoid averaging between 1 and 2 cm. The spore averages 27.6 × 5.6 μm in breadth, with pyriform polar capsules measuring 9.3 × 3.7 μm. Scanning electron microscopy reveals the presence of numerous longitudinal striati

SYNOPSIS.The kinetoplast nucleoid ofHerpetomonas muscarum muscarumis a disk‐shaped mass of filaments with sharply delimited anterior and posterior margins. The kinetoplast nucleoid ofHerpetomonas muscarum ingenoplastisis elongate, tapered, and made up of long, helically arranged filaments. Possible explanations of these structures on the basis of work by others on isolated kinetoplast DNA are given. The double flagellum ofHerpetomonasis seen by electron microscope to be two complete flagella in close contact but with no visible connection to each othe

摘要:
SYNOPSIS.Several fine‐structural changes were observed during formation of the so‐called pseudocysts ofTrichomitus batrachorumgrown in an agar‐free medium. Among these changes the most frequent were those of the undulating membrane complex. Internalization of the marginal lamella combined with disappearance of the fin‐like, membranous dorsal fold occurred with the highest frequency. In many organisms these alterations were accompanied by internalization of the recurrent flagellum, which, however, remained external in other, presumably earlier stages of pseudocyst formation. In some of the internalized and even still external recurrent flagella the microtubules were in various states of disassembly. The often distended flagellar membrane enclosed large accumulations of filaments 5 nm in diameter. Internalization of the anterior flagella also was noted. Changes similar to those characteristic of the recurrent flagella were not seen, however, among the microtubules of the anterior flagella or among those of the pelta or the a

摘要:
SYNOPSIS.An electronmicroscopic study was made of the centriolar apparatus in the rostrum ofDeltotrichonympha operculataandKoruga bonita, 2 closely related hypermastigote flagellates from the Australian termite,Mastotermes darwiniensis. In interphase flagellates, the centriolar apparatus consists of 2 similar parts with a mutually perpendicular orientation. Each part contains a large, club‐shaped centriolar body consisting of fibrillar and granular material, without recognizable internal symmetry or microtubules. The anterior centriolar body extends from the inner rostral wall, which is structurally related to the fibrous wall surrounding the posterior centriolar body. The 2 centriolar bodies are joined by connecting branches, which meet at 3 barren kinetosome‐like structures located inside the rostrum. Thus, an interphase flagellate has 2 centriolar bodies oriented at a 90° angle to each other, like a pair of typical centrioles in an interphase metazoan
