摘要:
Some others were intermediate between the normalI. lacazeioocysts and those resemblingCaryospora; they contained single sporocysts of various sizes associated with a structure that seemed to be

摘要:
SYNOPSISA survey of 117 Iowa snakes, representing 18 species within 12 genera, revealed the presence of 6 species ofEimeria, 5 of which are described as new and 1 of which (E. zamenis) is redescribed. Those species found, the average length‐width dimensions of their oocysts (in micrometers), and the respective hosts from which they were isolated were as follows:E. attenuatasp. n., 22.2 × 12.6, from 1 of 25 red‐sided garter snakes [Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis(Say)] and 1 of 14 northern water snakes [Natrix sipedon sipedon(Linnaeus)];E. iowaensissp. n., 17.8 × 14.5, from 1 of 25 redsided garter snakes;E. hydrophissp. n., 15.4 × 10.9, from 5 of 14 northern water snakes and 1 of 1 diamond‐backed water snake [N. rhombifera rhombifera(Hallowell)];E. helmisophissp. n., 13.8 × 10.6, from 1 of 5 western worm snakes [Carphophis amoenus vermis(Kennicott)];E. collanulisp. n., 33.1 × 18.3, from 1 of 14 prairie ring‐neck snakes (Diadophis punctatus arnyiKennicott), andE. zamenis, 31.0 × 17.0, from 1 of 6 eastern yellow‐bellied racers (Coluber constrictor flaviventrisSay) and 1 of 1 eastern milk snake [Lampropeltis triangulum triangulum(Lacépède)]. The overall infection rate for the 117 snakes examined was 9.2%; these data are tabulated. In addition, the possible synonymy ofE. lampropeltiswithE. zamenisis considered, and the probable status ofE. attenuata, E. hydrophis, E. zamenis, andE. annea, as parasites of multiple host species, is reviewed with regard to the phylogenetic relationships of the respective hosts from which they h

摘要:
SYNOPSISFrom 1969 through 1972, 605 wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavoLinnaeus) from 10 localities in Florida were examined for blood protozoans. The prevalence in turkeys more than a month old was 84% forHaemoproteus meleagridisLevine, 1961 and 72% forLeucocytozoon smithiLaveran and Lucet, 1905. Sixty‐three percent of the birds were infected by both parasites. Infections were most prevalent in juveniles 8–12 months of age. No infection ofH. meleagridisorL. smithiwas found in 111 poults younger than 35 days. Prevalences were similar in both sexes.Haemoproteus meleagridiswas more prevalent (87%) in the southern part of the state;L. smithiwas more prevalent (75%) in the north. The prevalence ofH. meleagridisdid not change during the 4 year period, butL. smithidecreased markedly in 1971, a year of low rainfall. None of the 605 blood films was positive forPlasmodium, but 24 (75%) of 32 blood samples were found by subinoculation technics to be positive for a species ofPlasmodiummorphologically similar toP. duraeHerman, 1941. No trypanosomes were seen on the 605 blood films or in bone marrow cultures (saline‐neopeptone‐blood) made from 11

摘要:
SYNOPSISStempellia millerisp. n. was found in blood cells and the adipose tissue of field‐collected larvae ofCulex pipiens quinquefasciatusSay. Its development is different from otherStempelliaspecies described in that it is dimorphic, producing two types of spores in adipose cells. Both were studied with the electron microscope. One spore is thin‐walled and uninucleate; the other is thick‐walled and binucleate. The latter spores are produced from sporonts that are somewhat similar to those ofNosema.Sporoblasts and spores ofS. milleriwere compared to those ofStempellia magnaKudo, andStempellia lunataHazard and Savage in both light and electron microscope preparations.S. milleriwas transmitted experimentally toCulex pipiens pipiens, C. p. quinquefasciatus, C. salinarius, C. tarsalis, andC. territans.Transmission ofS. magnato its host and other mosquito species was not possible. Although, generally low numbers of test larvae became infected with the pathogen, heavy infections were seen occasionally in individual specimens of its natural host,C. p. quinquefasciatus.Species ofAedes, Anopheles, Culiseta, Psorophora, andUranotaeniaexposed to spores ofS. milleriwere not susceptible to the di

摘要:
SYNOPSISA species ofSteniorisolated from freshwater ponds and tanks in and around Bangalore, India, showed striking differences from those that have been described so far. The ciliate is red in color and has 2 spherical macronuclei and 2 small micronuclei. On the basis of the nuclear apparatus and pigmentation of the body, it is believed to be a new species, named in honor of Professor Vance Tartar asStentor tartari. n. sp.

摘要:
SYNOPSISUltrastructural changes associated with the encystment ofSchizopyrenus russellihave been studied by electron microscopy. Before encystment small “black bodies” appear in the cytoplasm and later migrate toward the periphery. The outer cyst wall is secreted at this stage as a thin discontinuous layer which thickens and subsequently becomes continuous. Concomitant with this, the endoplasmic reticulum surrounds the mitochondria. The inner cyst wall later appears as a multilayered structure which presumably is cast off from the plasma membrane. Between the inner and outer layers of the cyst wall, there is a middle, less electron‐dense layer wherein extruded cytoplasmic material is found embedded at certain p

摘要:
SYNOPSISQuantitative methods were used to (a) determine the density ofTrypanosoma cruziin organs of CF1mice following intraperitoneal inoculation of 50,000 trypomastigotes of a Brazil strain ofT. cruziand (b) study the relation of the numbers of these intracellular stages to the numbers of trypomastigotes in the blood. Tissue stages (predominantly amastigotes) in heart, skeletal muscle (triceps), diaphragm, cerebrum, cerebellum, and musculature of stomach, duodenum, esophagus, jejunum, cecum, and rectum increased in numbers during the 1st 3 weeks of infection, reached maximum density 21–28 days after inoculation and subsequently declined in numbers until mice were histologically negative for intracellular parasites by 30–40 days. The density of tissue stages in the urinary bladder, uterine body, and ileum was similar with the exception that maximum numbers of parasites were observed slightly earlier at 15 days. The greatest density of intracellular stages was seen in heart, urinary bladder, diaphragm, and triceps muscle where mean counts of 44.6–60.0 × 106parasites/cc of muscle were recorded while maximum density of parasites in the uterine body, cerebrum, stomach, cerebellum, duodenum, esophagus, jejunum, ileum, cecum, and rectum was 13.0 × 106/cc of muscle or less. Amastigotes were not observed in sections of lymph node, thymus, salivary glands, liver, spleen, or kidney and only a single pseudocyst containing 5 amastigotes was seen in lung. With the exception of the brain and lung, intracellular parasites were located exclusively in the musculature.Trypomastigotes in the blood increased during the 1st 3 weeks of infection, reached maximum numbers 21–28 days after initiation of infection, and subsequently decreased until by 30–40 days parasites were observed only rarely in the blood of a few animals. Thus generally close correlation was noted between the numbers of intracellular stages ofT. cruziin the organs and trypomastigotes in the blood throughout acute Chagas’ disease in mice as evidenced by the concomitant increase in numbers of both stages, the coincidence of days of maximum parasite levels, and the simultaneous decline in numbers of both stages. The mean number of parasites/pseudocyst section varied in the organs studied. Of the 15 positive organs studied, the pseudocyst sections in skeletal muscle contained the highest mean number of parasites (64.3 parasites/pseudocyst section) and those pseudocyst sections seen in the musculature of the small intestine contained the lowest mean number (5.5–6.8 parasites/pseudocyst section respectively in ileum and jejunum).Serial sections of skeletal muscle, heart, urinary bladder, and stomach revealed the largest pseudocysts in skeletal muscle while those in the musculature of the urinary bladder we
