摘要:
The incidence of medication errors has risen dramatically during the last decade to an alarming number. Nurses report only 5% of significant errors, those considered life threatening.1Little research has been done related to medication errors at the administration stage or reporting methods. The purpose of this study was to compare medication error rate per 1,000 doses administered before and after the implementation of a bar code medication administration system. The study was conducted on two medical–surgical units at a midwest government hospital 12 months both before and after the implementation of the Bar Code Medication Administration system. The medication error rate per 1,000 doses administered by a nurse after implementation of the Bar Code Medication Administration system showed an 18% increase. The results probably do not indicate an increase in medication errors but rather an increase in the number of medication errors reported. This research highlights problems with programs evaluating medication errors and new technology implementation. Evaluators must have accurate baseline data before implementation. Past research has shown that the medication error rate has been underreported. In contrast to a staff reporting system, the computerization of medication administration improves the reporting system by reporting all errors. Once a more accurate error rate is known, new technology can be created, evaluated, and refined to reduce medication errors.

摘要:
This article describes the process of establishing a Web site as part of a collaborative project using visual art to promote breast health education. The need for a more “user-friendly” comprehensive breast health Web site that is aesthetically rewarding was identified after an analysis of current Web sites available through the World Wide Web. Two predetermined sets of criteria, accountability and aesthetics, were used to analyze these sites and to generate ideas for creating a breast health education Web site using visual art. Results of the analyses conducted are included as well as the factors to consider for incorporating into a Web site. The process specified is thorough and can be applied to establish a Web site that is aesthetically rewarding and informative for a variety of educational purposes.

摘要:
In the future, more nurses and other healthcare professionals will be providing patient education on the Internet. Having knowledge of processes that lead to quality patient education Web site design is essential. These quality assurance processes include determining the site’s purpose, selecting the user population, establishing the expected clinical and learning outcomes, providing an educational framework, incorporating specific design principles, and multiple and ongoing site evaluation. Therefore, Web site development processes designed to undergird quality patient education are presented, and an example Web site is used to illustrate them.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to review quantitative studies related to computer-based simulation and healthcare education and determine the effect of simulation on education and learning. A total of 513 references were retrieved, but only 9 quantitative studies met the inclusion criteria. To synthesize the data, the mean scores and standard deviations of the studies were used to determine the effect size, thedindex, and the direction of the effect. This review indicates that 75% of the studies showed positive effects of simulation on skill and/or knowledge acquisition. The potential of computer-based simulation as an education augmentation is enormous, but research is needed to determine effective and successful uses of high-fidelity simulations for nursing education.

摘要:
The purpose of the study was to identify Singapore’s healthcare industry’s minimum information technology (IT) performance standard expectations for nurses’ competencies. A needs assessment was conducted with a panel representing nursing education, nursing management and nursing practice. The findings in this study would provide suggestions to improve the current diploma and advanced diploma nursing programs curricula to meet the present workforce demands. The experts agreed that information technology is necessary and there were two main categories of IT skills identified, basic IT skills and work-related IT skills.
