摘要:
Despite the prevalence of children’s computerized games for recreational and educational purposes, the use of interactive technology to obtain pediatric research data remains underexplored. This article describes the development of laptop interactive data collection (IDC) software for a children’s health intervention study. The IDC integrates computer technology, children’s developmental needs, and quantitative research methods that are engaging for school-age children as well as reliable and efficient for the pediatric health researcher. Using this methodology, researchers can address common problems such as maintaining a child’s attention throughout an assessment session while potentially increasing their response rate and reducing missing data rates. The IDC also promises to produce more reliable data by eliminating the need for manual double entry of data and reducing much of the time and costs associated with data cleaning and management. Development and design considerations and recommendations for further use are discussed.

摘要:
The purpose of this project was to develop a guide to support use of the Omaha System in primary care. The Omaha System is a community practice-based standardized nursing language developed by the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) of Omaha, NE. Nurse practitioners at a primary care faculty practice clinic began using the Omaha System to describe more completely the advanced nursing care provided to clients, beyond ICD-9 and CPT codes. After 9 months of data collection, key faculty members convened to analyze the data and discuss issues in coding and interpretation. To simplify use of the system and facilitate orientation of new faculty, this group devised a Primary Care Guide for the Omaha System. High-frequency problems and interventions were identified. Definitions of the intervention categories were reviewed, and targets appropriate for the primary care environment were recorded. The result was a concise, user-friendly guide to assist the primary care nurse practitioner in the use of standardized nursing language.

摘要:
This article explores current research on online cancer support groups. A review of the literature revealed 9 research articles (describing 10 research studies) that focused on computer-mediated or Internet cancer support groups. The researchers in 9 of the 10 studies concluded that online cancer support groups helped people cope more effectively with their disease. Most of the research studies had small sample sizes. Six of the 10 studies did not include men, and six focused on Caucasian women with breast cancer. Information seeking/giving was prevalent in the online groups. Gender differences, negative psychological effects, and barriers to using online groups were identified. The few studies that were found in the literature suffered from a lack of experimental design, small and homogenous samples, and lack of outcome measures, thereby limiting applicability of results.

摘要:
As healthcare delivery systems’ requirements change, nurses will not only have to process and communicate more information, but the nature and types of this information as well as the communication methods will also dramatically change. Nurses must comprehend that information technology is the key to these changes. Korean nurses and nursing students need to enhance their computer technology knowledge and skills as the Korean health delivery system rapidly embraces technological innovations. Yonsei University College of Nursing in Seoul, Korea has the longest history in nursing education and the first graduate nursing programs in Korea. It offered its first nursing informatics (NI) class in 1998, making it one of the first informatics programs in Korean nursing education. The purposes of this project were to develop nursing informatics coursework that enabled students to build skills in developing Web sites, and to measure the effect of the coursework in terms of the students’ satisfaction and their confidence level. The author believes that this experience could be a helpful model for an international audience, although this is not an innovative project for some more advanced countries.

摘要:
Nursing is associated with high rates of musculoskeletal disorders from patient handling, and nurses are at high risk for developing cumulative trauma disorders, which can result from computer usage. Although there are many benefits to using computers in the workplace, nurses need to incorporate ergonomic factors into work settings to promote safe workplace environments. This article reviews recent literature about computer workstation ergonomics, discusses related policies, and makes recommendations about computer workstation design and related research in nursing workplace settings.
