AbstractThe leaves ofLaurelia sempervirens(Monimiaceae), an endemic Chilean tree known as ‘Laurel’, were used by the Mapuche Amerindians for treating headache and as a diuretic. Intravenous administration of a hydroalcoholicL. sempervirensextract to rats, elicited a hypotensive response of −27.0%±2.0% in the mean blood pressure of normotensive animals at a dose of 5 mg crude extract ± kg body weight. Bioassay‐guided isolation of the active ‘Laurel’ metabolites led to the alkaloid laurotetanine as the main hypotensive principle ofL. sempervirensleaves. At 1 mg/kg body weight, laurotetanine produced a hypotensive response of −29.0%±2.1% in the mean blood pressure of normotensive rats, with a duration of 2 min, both comparable to those elicited by the crude extract at 5 mg/kg. In the acute oral toxicity study, ‘Laurel’ proved to be a very low toxicity crude drug at doses up to 3 g crude extract/kg body weight. The data obtained support the use ofL. sempervirensin Mapuche

AbstractThe effect ofDautura metelleaf and root extracts, scopolamine and acetylcholine was studied on isolated smooth muscle preparations.Datura metelleaf extract and scopolamine showed antispasmodic effects, whereasDatura metelroot extract and acetylcholine caused contracture in isolated rat uterus and rectum whole muscle. This suggests the presence of a spasmogenic factor inDatura metelroot extract.

AbstractThe hypoglycaemic activity of an aqueous ethanolic extract ofSwertia japonicaand its ethyl acetate,n‐butanol, water soluble fractions, together with ether soluble and insoluble fractions of ethyl acetate soluble fraction was observed in streptozotocin (STZ) induced hyperglycaemic rats. It was found that an aqueous ethanolic extract was more effective than a mixture of tolbutamide and buformine, and an ethanolic extract of another species of this plant,S. chirayitain lowering the blood glucose level under similar experimental conditions.Furthermore, an ethyl acetate soluble fraction ofS. japonicaand its ether insoluble fraction showed a potent hypoglycaemic activit
