AbstractThe effects ofPanax ginsengwater extract on spatial working memory disruption induced by scopolamine were examined using a T‐maze delayed alternation task in rats. Scopolamine (0.025–0.1 mg/kg, i.p.) dose‐dependently impaired the maze performance, and physostigmine (0.4 mg/kg) significantly reversed the scopolamine (0.1 mg/kg)‐induced performance deficits. Ginseng extract (0.5–4.0 g dried root/kg) orally administered 60 min before testing dose‐dependently improved the maze performance disrupted by scopolamine (0.1 mg/kg). Ginseng extract given for 7 days in drinking water (2.0 and 4.0 g/kg/day) also exhibited dose‐dependent reversal of the scopolamine‐induced performance deficits. AbstractCrude drugs derived from the animal sources,Agkistrodon Japonicae(Hampi),Gecko(Goukai),PhocaeTestis et Penis (Kaikujin),Muschus(musk) andBezoar Bovis(bezoar) were studied to determine their effects on sexual and learning behaviour in mice subjected to chronic “hanging stress”. Drugs were given orally once a day for 14 days, sexual (licking, mounting and intromission) and learning (memory retrieval and memory extinction) behaviours were observed. All drugs protected mice against a stress‐induced decrease of licking and intromission behaviour, and all drugs, except Goukai, also protected against a decrease in mounting behaviour due to stress. Kaikujin protected mice against the stress‐induced increase of acceleration of memory loss and failure of memory retrieval. Hampi, Goukai and bezoar protected mice against stress‐induced increase of failure to retrieve memory. Musk protected mice against the stress‐induced increase of acceleration of memory loss. AbstractDecoction of the stem bark ofSpathodea campanulata(SC) exerted a hypoglycaemic activity in streptozotocin (SZ) diabetic mice. Later, the decoction, washed with chloroform, was divided in water and butanol fractions. Both had a hypoglycaemic activity but were devoid of any influence on insulin levels in SZ diabetic mice. The decoction also decreased blood glucose levels in a glucose tolerance test (GTT) in normal mice.

AbstractThe effects of a single intraperitoneal injection of ginsenoside‐Rb2, 2.5 mg/100g body weight, on the synthesis of nuclear RNA in liver cells were determined serially after administration. Although the RNA content remained almost unchanged, the uptake of orotic acid by RNA reached a peak 6h after ginsenoside‐Rb2administration. On the other hand, the total RNA polymerase activity increased after administration, reaching a peak at 4h; the RNA polymerase II activity also showed a pattern of variation similar to that of total RNA polymerase activity. AbstractThe water‐soluble extract ofSpirulina platensisachieved a dose‐dependent inhibition of the replication of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV‐1) in HeLa cells within the concentration range of 0.08–50 mg/mL. This extract proved to have no virucidal activity and did not interfere with adsorption to host cells. However, the extract affected viral penetration in a dose‐dependent manner. At 1 mg/mL the extract was found to inhibit virus‐specific protein synthesis without suppressing host cell protein synthesis if added to the cells 3 h before infection. AbstractA procedure was developed to measure plasma and urine likviritin levels by reversed‐phase high performance liquid chromatography. The likviritin pharmacokinetics was studied in rats after intravenous injection of the compound in a single dose of 1,3 and 10 mg/kg and after its oral administration in a single dose 50 and 500 rag/kg. AbstractUltraviolet‐radiation has been reported to cause lipid peroxidation in the liposomal membrane. In the present study, treatment with capsaicin, (8‐methyl‐n‐vanillyl‐6‐nonenamide), the pungent principle of red hot pepper, was shown to modify UV‐induced lipid peroxidation in the liposomal membrane. Treatment with low doses of capsaicin (less than 0.1 μg/mL of phosphatidyl choline liposome) produced a significant increase in UV‐induced lipid peroxidation, while high doses (0.1–0.5 μg/mL of PC liposome) caused a significant decrease of UV‐induced peroxidation. These pro‐oxidant and antioxidant activities of capsaicin over UV‐induced liposomal lipid peroxidation were also comparable to experiments modulated with standard pro‐oxidant ferrous sulphate and antioxidant sodium azide. The observed dual nature of capsaisin's action on the UV‐induced lipid peroxidation of the liposomal membrane may be attributed to the previously reported “activation” followed by “desensitization” action of caps
