AbstractThe inhibitory effects of glycoproteins separated from a hot water extract of corn silk (U‐CSE) on the formation of IgE antibodies after primarily and secondarily challenged responses with dinitrophenyl (DNP)‐ovalbumin (OVA) antigen in mice were investigated using the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) test.When U‐CSE was given intranasally or intraperitoneally the day before primary immunization, IgE antibody production was strongly inhibited. Furthermore, it was found that new formation of IgE antibodies was readily inhibited by U‐CSE administration in mice with high levels of IgE after primary immunization. AbstractTwo Dan Shen preparations commercially available in China were given intraperitoneally to rats with renal failure in order to investigate their effects on blood and urine components. In rats given an injection of compound Dan Shen composed of Dan Shen and Jiang Xiang, effects similar to those found after administration of magnesium lithospermate B (the active constituent of Dan Shen) alone were observed. 摘要:
AbstractA study was conducted to investigate the effects of magnesium lithospermate B on the uraemic symptoms and development of hypertension in rats with adenine‐induced renal failure. Chronic administration of 10 mg/kg body weight/day magnesium lithospermate B significantly reduced serum urea nitrogen, creatinine, methylguanidine, guanidinosuccinic acid and inorganic phosphate, accompanied by increased urinary excretion of urea, creatinine and electrolytes. In addition, renal tissue blood flow was significantly increased and mean blood pressure significantly decreased in the magnesium lithospermate B‐treated group compared with the control group. These results confirm that chronic administration of magnesium lithospermate B to rats with adenine‐induced renal failure ameliorates the uraemic symptoms and development of hypertension by improving renal haemodynamics and electrolyte metab

AbstractThirty‐four patients with chronic active hepatitis B (CAH‐B) were treated with Padma 28, a herbal remedy with immunocorrective properties. The patients were monitored by clinical and biochemical testing, as well as by serological, immunological and histological techniques. After treatment lasting 1 year 26 of 34 patients (76.5%) improved or normalized in biochemical parameters as well as in total T‐cell count (CD3) and CD4/CD8 index. An improvement in histology was seen in 19 patients (55.9%). An influence of Padma 28 on the serological markers of HBV infection was seen in 26 of 34 patients (76.5%). Six patients of 34 eliminated HBsAg (17.6%) and four of them seroconverted to anti‐HBs. Eleven patients eliminated HBeAg and HBV‐DNA, and eight of them seroconverted to anti‐HBe. Eight patients with persistent HBs and HBe‐antigenaemia had a decreased titre of HBsAg and HBeAg. In eight patients (23.5%) no influence of Padma 28 on serological markers of HBV infection was seen throughout the observation period. These observations indicate that treatment with Padma 28 of patients with CAH‐B fulfils two of the most important tasks for drug therapy of the disease, it influences the activity of genes of HBV and stops the progression of liv

AbstractFive phytochemicals with potential chemopreventive activity were tested to determine their antimutagenic effects toward the tobacco‐specific nitrosamine 4‐(methylnitrosamino)‐1‐(3‐pyridyl)‐1‐butanone (NNK) inSalmonella typhimuriumstrain TA1535. NNK at a concentration of 80 mM was metabolically activated by hamster liver microsomes. Three phytochemicals; capsaicin, diallyl sulphide and silymarin, exhibited antimutagenic activity toward NNK in a dose‐dependent manner. At the highest nontoxic concentration tested (0.5 mmole/plate), the inhibitory effect of capsaicin, diallyl sulphide and silymarin was 85%, 23% and 48%, respectively. D‐limonene and tannic acid were also tested but did not show antimutagenic activity toward NNK in TA1535. These results suggest that capsaicin, diallyl sulphide and silymarin inhibited the activation of NNK and indicate that further studies of the efficacy of these phytochemicals in the chemoprevention of NNK‐induced carcinoge

摘要:
AbstractThe tree bark ofMansa rohiniextract (MRE) showed a dose dependent inhibition of rat paw oedema. MRE also significantly reduced the volume of peritoneal ascites and gamma glutarnyl transpeptidase. The antiinflammatory activity of MRE was comparable to nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents such as naproxen, ibuprofen and piroxicam. MRE was devoid of ulcerogenic properties and hence it is a potential antiinflammatory agent.

AbstractDatura metelLinn. powdered leaf (25% w/w) has been formulated in lactose‐based granulations into compacts using the wet granulation process. The effects of changes in the particle size ofD. metelpowder on the properties of its granules and compacts were studied. Bigger and less friable granules were produced with increase in powder size due to the increased wettability of the powder with size. These resulted in stronger and less friable compacts with a longer disintegration time. Granule flow rate increased while angle of repose decreased with increase inD. metelpowder size.
