SUMMARYChildren in hospital need play facilities which provide a wide range of stimuli, presented so as to claim the children's attention. Children confined to bed can have their beds moved periodically to avoid monotony in the environment, and the bed can be fitted with attachments which allow the child to reach and handle his toys more easily, and provide extra stimuli for mentally handicapped children. Playrooms for mobile children benefit from, additional apparatus, such as low wall‐bars and ropes suspended from the ceiling. Outdoor play areas should have irregular contours, and their structural elements may need to be changed to suit particular groups of children.It is most important that staff should be available to help with and show interest in the children's play activities.RÉSUMÉLes enfants en hopital ont besoin de facilités pour jouer qui leur fournissent un choix de stimuli étendu, présentés de façon a attirer leur attention. Les enfants retenus au lit peuvent avoir leur lit changé de place périodiquement pour éviter la monotonie dans leur environnement, et le lit peut comporter des appareils qui permettent à l'enfant d'atteindre et de manipuler ses jouets plus facilement, et apportent des stimuli supplémentaires aux enfants handicappés mentallement. Les salles de jeux pour les enfants qui peuvent se lever sont améliorées par l'addition d'appareils tels que barres assez basses contre le mur et cordes suspenduesau plafond. Kinder denen Bettruhe verordnet ist, kann man die Betten von Zeit zu Zeit umstellen um Monotonie in der Umgebung zu verhindern und das Bett kann mit Einrichtungen ausgestattet werden. die dem Kind erleichtern seine Spielsachen zu erreichen und mil ihnen umzugehen und welche zusätzliche Stimuli für geistig behinderte Kinder bieten. Es ist zu empfehlen, dass Spielzimmer für mobile Kinder mit zusätzlichen Geräten wie zum Beispiel Wandstangen und von der Decke hängenden Tauen ausgestattet werden. Aussen‐Spielplätze sollten irreguläre Umrisse haben und die strukturellen Bestand‐teile können geändert werden müssen um für die einzelnen Kindergruppen geeignet zu sein.Es ist aüsserst wichtig, dass Personal zur Verfügung steht um den Kindern mit ihren Spieltätigkeiten zu helfen und darin Interesse zu bezeigen.RESUMENNiños en hospitales necesitan facilidades para jugar que ofrezcan estímulos diversos, presentados de manera que atraigan la atención de los niños. Si el niño tiene que quedarse en cama, es posible mover la cama de vez en cuando para evitar monotonía en el medio ambiente, y fijar aparatos que permitan que el niño alcance sus juguetes y juegue más facilmente con ellos, y que ofrezcan estímulos adicionales para los niños atrasados. Para los niños que pueden levantarse, es deseable equipar el cuarto de juegos con aparatos adicionales, tales como barras fijadas bajo en la pared y cuerdas colgadas del techo. SUMMARYThe play of mentally handicapped children differs from that of their normal peers in its brief duration and the repetitive nature of its content. To some extent this may be traced to impairment of motivation, handicaps of perception and learning, and distractibility. These aspects of mental handicap in children are pursued along with illustrations taken from the literature of experimental psychology. Brief concluding reference is made to the recent application of teaching machines to the play of severely handicapped infants and the implications this carries for the therapeutic development of play for the mentally handicapped child.RÉSUMÉLe jeu des enfants mentallement handicapés diffère de celui de leur compagnons par sa courte durée et la nature repetitive de son contenu. Ceci peut être dû en partie à une alteration de la motivation, des handicaps pour percevoir et apprendre, et de la distractibilité. Ces aspects de l'handicap mental chez l'enfant sont recherchés et illustrés par des exemples tirés de la littérature de psychologic expérimentale. En conclusion on fait brièvement référence à l'application récente des machines à apprendre au jeu des enfants sévèrement handicapés et les implications que cela apporte pour le développement théra‐ peutique du jeu pour l'enfant handicapé mentallement.RESUMENLos juegos de niños atrasados son distintos de los de niños sanos de la misma edad, con respecto a su duración corta y su carácter repetidor. Hasta cierto punto, estas diferencias resultan de falta de motivación, percepción y capacidad de aprender limitadas, e inhabilidad para fijar la atención. Se discuten estos aspectos de una incapacidad mental en niños, con ejemplos sacados de la literatura de la psicología experimental.
