AbstractThe effects of comonomer composition and the method of monomer addition on the compositional homogeneity and the colloidal properties of (vinyl acetate‐butyl acrylate) copolymer latexes were investigated. Particle size and distribution, and the surface characteristics of the copolymer latexes were found to vary with the comonomer composition and the type of the polymerization process. The aging of the latexes affects the surface properties and by that the colloidal stability against electrolytes. Branching, hydrolysis, flexibility of the molecules and heterogeneity of the latex particles appear to play a major role for the stability of the latexe

AbstractEmulsion copolymerization of acrylonitrile and styrene is considered from the kinetic and thermodynamic point of view. Copolymerization proved a very useful tool for investigating emulsion polymerization mechanism. It is shown that, at least for AN/S copolymerization, the main site for polymerization is the monomer swollen polymer particle. Thermodynamics is an appropriated base for the process control of emulsion copolymerization to prepare copolymers of controlled composition and particle size.

AbstractThe degree of bonding of Cd2+ions in aqueous solutions of copolymers in the range 0<[KCl]<0,05 M was found to depend on the concentration of KCl, the content of ionogenic groups in the copolymers and the copolymer concentration. A polarographic method was developed for investigating the kinetics of the copolymerization of ionogenic monomers. The method is based on measuring the degree of bonding of Cd2+ions to macroions in copolymerization.

AbstractBei der Umsetzung von Ethylen‐Vinylalkohol‐Copolymeren mit Säureanhydriden in verschiedenen Lösungsmitteln treten in Abhängigkeit von der molaren Konzentration Besonderheiten im Reaktionsverhalten auf. AbstractTwo different methods of effecting modification of the fibre structure, namely, heat treatment and solvent treatment, have been investigated. Heat setting and solvent treatement led to improvement in the crystallinity of the poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibres. Pretreatment in dimethyl formamide and acetonitrile resulted in reduced tensile strength.
