摘要:
Acute congestive heart failure (CHF) is a common clinical problem with a serious prognosis for the patient. For acute care hospitals, it is also the number one “money loser” for its diagnostic related group. For these reasons, it is important to understand how the critical care nurse can implement nursing measures and work within a multidisciplinary team to prevent complications in CHF patients. This article identifies the determinants of myocardial performance and nursing interventions that help lessen or prevent complications in CHF patients.

摘要:
Although testing of physiologic nursing diagnoses has occurred, critical care nurses have not validated the defining characteristics of the diagnoses, Spiritual Distress and Ineffective Individual Coping. This research report describes how critical care nurses rated the defining characteristics of these diagnoses. Specific strategies are given to assist nurses in recognizing the defining characteristics so that they can effectively intervene in the spiritual and coping needs of patients, thereby enhancing patient outcomes.

摘要:
Health care providers today have the challenge of enhancing patient outcomes while simultaneously reducing costs. To accomplish this, combining two or more units under one manager is an option to consider. This article will describe a process that could be taken when deciding to merge critical care units either physically or managerially.

摘要:
What are nurse administrators to do when their institution is in need of competent nurses to staff the ICU and the majority of applicants are either inexperienced or new graduates? Nurses from one institution grappled with this question. They decided that it was their job to teach novice nurses to make sound clinical judgments in life-threatening situations. As part of this process, they developed a Clinical Decision-Making Assessment (CDMA) tool. This article describes the CDMA and provides suggestions for classroom and clinical teaching.
