摘要:
The critical care nurse plays a key role in assessing, educating, and counseling women with cardiovascular disease. Recently recognized as an important health risk for women as well as men, cardiovascular disease can be prevented and complications minimized. This article brings the nurse up-to-date with the latest research findings with implications for women and their caregivers.

摘要:
Neuroprotective agents are investigational drugs that can potentially suppress the development of secondary brain injury following cerebral traumatic injury. Currently, critical care nurses in research centers are challenged to care for these patients during the clinical trial phase of these drugs. Soon, if these drugs pass the trial phase and are approved, critical care nurses in all settings may be administering neuroprotective agents to brain injury patients, identifying side effects, and evaluating their effects on secondary brain injury.

摘要:
Maximizing healing in the ICU environment requires active promotion of sleep as a nursing intervention. Changing practice requires a two-pronged approach: developing an expanded knowledge base related to the physiological effects of sleep and especially healing, and minimizing the impact of the traditional ICU system on sleep deprivation.

摘要:
Facilitating family visits in critical care settings is a challenging nursing responsibility. Before family members are in a position to be supportive of patients, they must deal with stressful aspects of the ICU environment. A model of the stages in family visits derived from a clinical field study is described. This model provides a framework for assessment and intervention strategies to facilitate patient-family contact in critical care.

摘要:
The family anxiously waits to see the patient who has just been admitted to the critical care unit. Your attention and energy are tightly focused on meeting the patient's emergent needs. However, the family, too, has special needs. How can the critical care nurse meet the needs of both the family and the patient? What teaching materials can the experienced nurse, clinical nurse specialist, or nurse educator develop to make teaching efficient and effective?
