Immunohistological methods using monoclonal antibodies have proved to be valuable in the differentiation between cells of various origins. We have previously shown most leucocyte differentiation antigens to be very resistant to post‐mortem disintegration (Pallesen&Knudsen 1985). In the present study we have examined the preservation of several non‐haematopoietic antigens in tissue samples of human skin, kidney, liver, pancreas, lung, thyroid gland, uterine tissue, female breast and brain from 30 autopsies performed at specific intervals after death. Frozen tissue sections were stained using monoclonal antibodies and an immunoperoxidase method. A total of 17 monoclonal antibodies against various intermediate filament proveins, epithelial antigens, various hormones and factor VIII related antigen were tested. We found surprisingly good preservation and staining of tissue antigens—even 3 d after death—in all organs except pancreas. It is concluded that many tissue antigens are fairly resistant to post‐mortem disintegration and that immunohistology may be applied to diagnostic problems in human autopsy

Lymph node involvement in cat scratch disease is characterized by a granulomatous lymphadenitis with micro‐abscesses. Recently, it has been shown that the possible aetiological agent is a micro‐organism which stains with some silver stains. In this study 60 lymph nodes were studied from 60 patients, using a modified Dieterlé's stain. In 40 cases (66%) rod‐shaped bacilli with rounded extremities were observed. They were negative both with the Gram and Ziehl‐Neelsen stains. Eighteen phaeochromocytomas, including both sporadic and familial cases, four cervical paragangliomas, two jugular paragangliomas, and one abdominal paraganglioma were examined immunohistochemically for the presence of 5–100 protein. Positive staining in cells morphologically similar to the sustentacular cells of normal paraganglia and adrenal medulla were found in all paragangliomas and in the benign and aggressively growing phaeochromocytomas. In the two malignant tumours no positive reaction was demonstrated. Nine cases of T‐cell lymphoma presenting in the Guizhou province of China between 1982 and 1984 are reviewed. A 57‐year‐old male caucasian presented with a peripheral neuropathy which had an autonomic component. Clinical examination revealed hepatomegaly and laboratory tests showed derangement of liver function tests and IgG lambda myeloma. Biopsy of the liver was performed. Histological examination revealed AL‐type amyloid in the hepatic arteries and a perisinusoidal deposit of diastase resistant, periodic acid‐Schiff positive material which did not react in the same way as the arterial deposit, giving no apple green birefringence when stained with Congo red. Immunohistochemistry showed the material to consist of lambda light chains. Electron microscopy confirmed that the material did not have the ultrastractural characteristics of amyloid. Light and transmission electron microscopic studies as well as immunohistochemical investigations were performed on a case of multiple myeloma in a 40‐year‐old female with systemic kappa light chain deposition. The latter took the form of extensive deposits in the liver, spleen and bone marrow. Amyloid was not found in these deposits, although it was present in the wall of branches of the portal vein. Conversely, amyloid but not light chain deposition was found in the tongue, synovial membrane from the knee and myocardium. The kidney was the only organ to show both amyloid and light chain deposits intimately associated with each other in and around tubules and collecting ducts. Ultrastructurally the light chain deposits were seen to be biphasic, having two granular components of different electron density. In the spleen and bone marrow, but not in the liver, the kappa light chain deposits were surrounded by multinucleated giant cells. This is the first report of light chain deposition disease associated with a foreign body type of giant cell reaction. This is a case report of a 14‐year‐old girl who presented with malignant hypertension. She had high plasma levels of both active and inactive renin and investigation revealed a renal tumour. The tumour, a renal cell carcinoma, was removed by nephrectomy following which the blood pressure and the plasma renin levels fell to normal. An immunocytochemical study using an antibody to pure human renin showed no detectable renin in the kidney but the tumour contained a population of granular cells which showed strong positive staining for immunoreactive renin. The presence of heterotopic decidual tissue in the sinuses of a pelvic lymph node from a pregnant patient with cervical carcinoma is described. The diagnostic implications are discussed.

Two examples of a variant of benign spiradenoma are reported, both characterized by their large size and high degree of vascularity. The results of studies using light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and immunohistology are described. The relationship of this unusual variant to other spiradenomas and their eccrine sweat gland origin is discussed. The possible misdiagnosis of this rare type of spiradenoma is emphasized.
