The phenotype of 36 cases of hairy cell leukaemia has been investigated using a panel of monoclonal antibodies reactive with normal human lymphoid cells and with hairy cells. Staining was performed on frozen sections and/or cell smears by the recently developed APAAP immuno‐alkaline phosphatase procedure. In about 90% of cases, neoplastic cells reacted strongly with antibodies against HLA‐DR, leucocyte common antigen, B‐cells (antibodies B1 and To15), hairy‐associated antigens (antibodies KB‐90, S‐HCL3, HC2) and activated T‐lymphocytes (antibodies anti‐Tac and Tü69). The phenotype of 10% of cases was clearly different in that the neoplastic cells were negative or only weakly positive for one or more of the antigens recognized by HC2, anti‐Tac and Tü69. Antibody HC1 reacted with tumour cells of only 50% of the hairy cell leukaemia cases investigated. In order to investigate their possible role as prognostic markers, staining with the antibodies NKI/C‐3 and anti‐S100, that are applicable on paraffin sections, was examined using a group of primary cutaneous melanomas and autologous metastases using the immunoperoxidase procedure. All melanoma lesions stained with anti‐S100, and the large majority with NKI/C‐3. In primary melanomas showing a moderate or dense associated lymphocytic infiltrate, significantly more tumour cells stained with anti‐S100 than in primary melanomas with a slight or absent infiltrate. In markedly pigmented metastases, significantly more tumour cells stained with NKI/C‐3 than in less pigmented lesions; in primary melanomas this phenomenon just failed to be significant. In metastases with a high mitotic index a significantly lower proportion of tumour cells stained with NKI/C‐3 than in lesions with a low mitotic index. No significant differences in staining were found between a group of primary melanomas with metastases and a group without metastases within a follow‐up period of 5 years. Therefore, although staining with NKI/C‐3 and anti‐S100 appears to be associated with certain histopathological characteristics, it has no direct contribution to the assessment of prognosis

Two cases of chronic cystitis, two of chronic ureteritis, one of chronic pyelitis and two transitional cell carcinomas of the urinary tract showed glandular metaplasia or focal mucin production. Positive staining for O‐acetylated sialic acid variants (sites 7 and 8) detected by the PB‐KOH‐PAS method was found in the two cases of cystitis, in one of chronic ureteritis and in one of chronic pyelitis. Positive staining was observed only in areas showing an intestinal type of metaplasia and in which goblet cells and argyrophil cells were also identified. These findings taken together with earlier studies on ovarian cystadenomas lead the authors to believe that O‐acetylated variants are markers of an intestinal type of epithelium. A case of multicentric extra‐abdominal fibromatosis, a rare entity, arising in a young female is presented. Signet‐ring cell lymphomas are rare especially as primary gastric tumours; alpha chain disease of the stomach is also unusual. A case of gastric signet‐ring cell lymphoma with free alpha chains in the gastro‐duodenal juice is reported and its light microscopic, immunohistological and ultrastructural features are described. Although the morphogenesis of signet‐ring cell lymphoma is not clear, the present case showed many of the features of a mucosa‐associated lymphoma. This rare variant of follicle centre cell lymphoma may easily be mistaken for a signet‐ring cell carcinoma. Monoclonal gammopathy (IgG, lambda) in a 37‐year‐old man with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, was markedly decreased after thyroidectomy. Histological examination of the thyroid showed large lymphoid follicles surrounded by a massive proliferation of plasma cells. Immunological studies revealed that interfollicular plasma cells stained monotypically for lambda chain, findings in keeping with a diagnosis of plasmacytoma of the thyroid. A case of nodular fibrous proliferation of the tunica vaginalis testis occurring in a 25‐year‐old male is described. Electron microscopy and immunocytochemical analysis confirm a fibroblastic origin. The histogenesis of the lesion is considered in the light of the findings and a review of the literature. A case of plexiform tumorlet of the uterus is reported and studied histologically and by immunohistochemistry. The presence of desmin in the tumour cells demonstrates their smooth muscle origin. These results are compared with other reports in the literature with special emphasis on histogenesis.
