There has been much interest recently on local intra‐uterine materno‐fetal interactions particularly in the placental bed where cellular relationships between mother and fetus are at their most intimate. While few histopathologists are expected to interpret formal placental bed biopsy specimens, confrontation with tissue from this site is common following abortion, post‐partum haemorrhage or molar gestation. This review gives an account of recent advances in our knowledge of the histology, immunohistochemistry and pathology of the placental bed. Giant cell fibroblastoma is an uncommon, benign tumour of soft tissue which was first described in 1982. Thirty‐five cases have been previously published. Six new cases are reported herein, which have also been examined immunohistochemically for the expression of vimentin, desmin, myoglobin, S‐100 protein, neurofilaments, Factor VIII related antigen and binding of the lectinUlex europaeus.The previous literature has been reviewed. Giant cell fibroblastoma most often presents in early childhood as a slowly growing, infiltrative subcutaneous mass at a wide variety of sites. It shows a predilection for males and may recur locally in up to 50% of cases. The very distinctive histological features, characterized by so‐called solid and angiectoid areas, are presented. The tumour cells were vimentin positive but negative for all other markers used. In particular, there was no evidence of endothelial differentiation. A case of undifferentiated carcinoma of the salivary gland occurring in the parotid gland of a southern Chinese was reported. Tumour cells showed immunofluorescence for Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV)‐associated nuclear antigen, and DNA hybridization demonstrated the presence of EBV‐DNA in tumour tissue. Quantitative morphometric analysis was used in 10 resection specimens to assess so‐called transitional mucosa immediately adjacent to colorectal carcinoma. Eleven nuclear and cellular variables were measured from the malignant epithelial area and from zones of increasing distance (1 cm) from the lesion. In addition, mean mucosal height was assessed for each zone. Morphometrical differences between the mucosa immediately adjacent to the malignant epithelium and that taken at some distance from it were determined by Mann‐Whitney U tests. Transitional mucosa showed increased mucosal height but no nuclear differences from normal mucosa. Other work has shown that there are nuclear morphometric differences associated with premalignant conditions in the colon. Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)‐associated disease are subject to a wide variety of unusual opportunistic infections and to the development of malignant tumours. These complications frequently manifest themselves within the gastrointestinal tract and endoscopic biopsies may contribute to their diagnosis. The results of 63 such biopsies from 28 patients are reviewed in this study. The diagnoses made included: upper gastrointestinal tract candidiasis (n=6); cytomegalovirus infection of large intestine (n=2); cryptosporidiosis (n=1); spirochaetosis (n=2); Kaposi's sarcoma (n=4); malignant lymphoma (n=3); and anal carcinoma (n=2). Difficulty is sometimes encountered in distinguishing between pleomorphic adenoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, especially in small biopsies from salivary glands. The argyrophil (AgNOR) staining technique for nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) has been applied to a series of benign and malignant salivary gland tumours. We studied 35 salivary gland tumours, 13 benign and 22 malignant. In all specimens clearly defined silver‐stained intranuclear AgNOR dots were visible. The differences between the numbers of AgNORs in the benign and malignant groups, notably pleomorphic adenomas, adenoid cystic carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, were highly significant. In view of this difference we propose that the AgNOR staining technique is of diagnostic help in distinguishing between these salivary gland tumour

A silver colloid technique was applied to 50 colposcopic biopsies of cervix. These comprised nine cases of wart virus infection of the cervix, 11 cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I, nine cases of CIN II, eight cases of CIN III, seven normal biopsies and six cases showing only incomplete squamous metaplasia. The mean numbers of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORS) increased from CIN I to CIN III. Statistically significant differences for AgNORs were found in comparisons between CIN III, normal basal cells, human papilloma virus‐infected basal cells and incomplete squamous metaplasia, and in comparisons between normal basal cells and human papilloma virus‐infected basal cells. CIN III could be distinguished from incomplete squamous metaplasia and from basal cells and from human papilloma virus‐infected basal cells. The latter could be distinguished from normal basal cells on the basis of their AgNORs. A case of a primary undifferentiated sarcoma of the descending thoracic aorta in a 75‐year‐old man is reported. Intraluminal growth and occlusion produced congestive heart failure and renal failure. The thoracic aorta was relatively normal on chest radiography so that the lesion was undiscovered until the autopsy.
