Using serial sections of resin‐embedded tissue we found granular peripolar cells in six human kidneys. They were present in 3% to 28% of the glomeruli. Using an immunoperoxidase staining technique and an antibody to pure human renin we showed that the human peripolar cell contains no immunostainable renin. The number of peripolar cells correlated with the number of juxtaglomerular apparatus (JGAs) with renin‐containing cells; their distribution within the renal cortex was similar, both being found predominantly in glomeruli in the superficial cortex. There was a close anatomical relationship between the peripolar cells and the renin containing cells in individual JGAs. The pathology, including ultrastructure, of seven mucous cell adenomas of the bronchial glands is described. They occurred as polypoid intraluminal lesions in both male and female patients between the ages of 7 and 55 years (mean 26 years). Histologically they were all benign and consisted of predominantly mucus‐secreting cells arranged in acini or ducts or in solid groups. A little squamous differentiation was evident in four cases, insufficient in our opinion, to justify the term mucoepidermoid tumour. By electron microscopy, many tumour cells resembled mucous cells of the bronchial glands, containing typical large mucous granules of finely granular, reticular or fibrillated material, and sometimes small electron‐dense bodies. Seven patients with localized nodular pulmonary amyloidosis and four with tracheobronchial amyloidosis are presented and the pathological features described. The congophilia of these forms of amyloid is resistant to potassium permanganate, compatible with it representing immunoamyloid. This, together with the associated intense lymphocytic and plasma cell infiltration suggests a local inflammatory aetiology.

An immunoperoxidase technique with monoclonal antibodies for the identification of lymphocyte subsets and MHC Class II antigens was applied to oesophageal biopsies from two patients with herpetic oesophagitis. Oesophageal epithelial cells were found to express the MHC Class II antigen. The inflammatory infiltrate of the lamina propria was composed of both B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes.

Pattern formation in chondroid development is compared with growth models exhibited by mesenchymal and myxoid chondrosarcomas. The results reveal strong similarities between mesenchymal chondrosarcoma and normal chondrogenesis. The fine vascularization of the tumor lobules of myxoid chondrosarcoma is discussed in relation to chondroid differentiation. A common histogenetic approach to the interpretation and classification of these neoplasias is proposed.

The distribution of epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) in the kidney and its tumours has been studied using a polyclonal anti‐EMA antiserum and the immunoperoxidase‐antiperoxidase technique (PAP). Twelve fetal and 10 adult kidneys examined showed EMA to be confined to the distal tubular or their embryological precursors. In a series of 889 Wilms' tumours we found 29 pure mesoblastic nephromas. The age of the patients varied from newborn to 22 months, but only five were older than four months. Two histologic types were recognized—leiomyomatous (9) and cellular (20) with a fibrohistiocytic appearance. The leiomyomatous type was almost invariably in stage I, smaller and present in younger infants. At operation half of the cellular type has ruptured or infiltrated the renal pelvis or perirenal tissue. Two patients died of postoperative complications. We studied the interrelation of morphometric features, the presence of human papilloma virus antigens (localized by the immunoperoxidase method), and the degree of koilocytosis in koilocytotic cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. We determined the morphometric features of the cells from the deep, the middle, and the superficial layers of the affected koilocytotic epithelium and in non‐koilocytotic immature metaplasia and squamous cervical epithelium. This approach allows quantification of disturbances of maturation in cervical epithelium. Our quantitative findings support the contention of other authors that human papilloma virus infection is associated with a morphologically distinct lesion, which forms a morphological continuum with neoplasia. It can be argued that, in addition to the degree of koilocytosis, nuclear enlargement and excessive cellular enlargement in the middle layer of the affected epithelium are viral‐related effects. With increasing immaturity of the cervical intraepithelial neoplasia all investigated viral‐related changes are less prominent. Malignant epithelioid schwannoma is a well‐defined entity. However epithelioid tumours arising other than in a nerve trunk, in a benign nerve sheath tumour or in neurofibromatosis are problematical. We describe a case of a nodular tumour of the cheek which recurred twice without metastasis. Light microscopy showed an amelanotic epithelioid tumour. Immunohistology showed positive staining for vimentin and S100 protein and electron microscopy showed distinctive appearances suggestive of schwannoma. We discuss the differential diagnosis of the tumour, compare it with reported tumours resembling both melanoma and schwannoma and conclude that this may be a further example of the distinctive tumour reported as ‘malignant epithelioid schwannoma of superficial soft tissu
