It is usual to have both a storm and a separate foul sewer system for any new housing or industrial development. The optimal design of either the storm or the foul sewer network can be handled efficiently by existing Dynamic Programming methods.

摘要:
This paper concerns the development of mathematical programming techniques for the reliability assessment of three-dimensional structures, assuming an ideal rigid-plastic behaviour of the material. Linear approximations of the kinematic compatibility relations are formulated and this requires the assumption of parametric stress and displacement fields, which are constructed by means of finite element procedures. According to the first-order second-moment method, the identification of the reliability index is then formulated as a constrained concave quadratic minimization. Numerical results for a shallow shell model are presented.

摘要:
A knowledge-based approach to enable structural engineering design software to recover from non-monotonic states is described. A brief description of nonmonotonic reasoning is given followed by some examples from practical structural design problems which exhibit non-monotonicity. A prototype knowledge-based system, DESCON, is then described which can automatically control non-monotonic states in structural design using a dependency network model of design. The basis of the network model of design is described together with the details of the implementation of DESCON.

摘要:
A mathematical model is described which provides a rational approach for obtaining, organizing and evaluating the specific information needed for the determination of hazardous waste application on land treatment systems. The model is divided into five modules. These modules represent the principal mechanisms which are assumed to govern the fate of an organic hazardous material in the vadose zone. They are the following: loading conditions, degradation, advective transport, dispersive transport and sorption/desorption. The numerical algorithm for advective transport is described in some detail using a soil-water system as an example. The model is demonstrated for selected aro-matics found in a refinery waste sludge. Application of the model provides a methodology for predicting the behavior of hazardous constituents in soil systems and ranking chemicals according to their need to be controlled.

The capacity planning problem examined in this paper has a number of applications in the environmental management area including municipal solid waste management, hazardous waste treatment and disposal, and municipal wastewater sludge management. A dynamic programming formulation is presented for the specific capacity planning problem, and considerations of problem structure that allow computational efficiencies are discussed. This long-term planning model is applied to hypothetical and case-study problems from the municipal solid waste management area. The problem is generalized and compared to other problem types in the capacity planning literature.

The paper analyzes the equations which model the growth of human populations and the accompanying infrastructure developments which are required to support the corresponding societies because of their direct or implicit dependence upon human needs. Systems methods are employed to treat the coupled non-linear phenomena, and numerical examples are displayed. The fundamental nature of the models is found to be logistic, and there is switching at critical points between regimes or phases of growth.
