摘要:
A new method for optimally sizing the bars of a structural truss is described. Though many different methods for solving this problem have been proposed in the past, the present method is radically different in that it sets the problem in a probabilistic context and uses the Shannon entropy function to infer improved solutions based upon available information. The resulting method is extremely simple to operate and is efficient, suggesting that there may be other potential uses for informational entropy in applications not usually concerned with statistical inference.

This paper studies expansion planning of water supply and wastewater treatment systems. The components of these systems (water intakes, main pipelines, recycling treatment plants and users) are described with the aid of main characteristic parameters. For long-term planning (about 20 years) the values of the parameters of the system components are uncertain. So, we propose to treat some parameters of the model as discrete random variables. The problem is formulated as a stochastic multicriteria decision problem taking into account cost, reliability, and environmental protection criteria. The constraints consist of maximum water source capacities and water demands for particular users. We analyse the problem with random coefficients in the objective functions and a random vector of constraint right-hand sides. In the paper, the deterministic multicriteria problem is constructed from the initial stochastic problem. The proposed approach is illustrated by a numerical example.

摘要:
A number of alternative sources of electrical power are investigated for a rapidly developing country, Transkei. The alternatives comprise various hydroelectric projects and associated reservoirs, or purchase of electricity from the South African Electricity Supply Corporation (ESCOM). Each project is optimal at a different size, and being in the same river basin, the Mzimvubu basin, they are interdependent. Mixed integer programming is used to select which source should be implemented at successive points in time. The ESCOM supply is regarded as a linear variable and the various hydroprojects handled as integers in order to conserve their integrity after project optimization. The effect of different inflation rates of hydro and coal-fired ESCOM power is found to affect the sequencing. With equal inflation, large storage is recommended for hydro, and with lower thermal cost inflation, minimal storage is preferred. The resulting optimal plan may be linked into a national economic master plan by using the decomposition principle.

Procedures to achieve this have been extensively explored for structures composed of rigid-ideal-plastic materials or members. However, there has been rather less consideration for structures with more general member properties.

摘要:
Expansive soils pose major problems to construction in Sudan and many other countries all over the world. The short pile is one of the popular foundation types used in expansive soils. A probabilistic model for the short-pile-expansive-soil interaction problem is presented. The soil properties are represented by random variables and the probability of failure is estimated. A case study is given to illustrate the use of this model in practice.
