摘要:
This paper describes the trial development of two expert systems for a water treatment plant using the CRYSTAL expert system shell on a personal computer. The first expert system is aimed at assisting an operator in the sequence of actions to be carried out following activation of one of 11 6 alarms in the control room of the plant. The second expert system is intended to aid an operator in making changes to the alum addition following the activation of one of the alarms related to alum. Further work needs to be carried out before these systems can be implemented in practice.

摘要:
This paper presents the experimentation conducted in knowledge elicitation, with special reference to bridge design, as part of a much greater research effort in the computational modelling of conceptual design using artificial intelligence techniques. The extent of the knowledge elicitation encompasses the entire process of extracting, characterizing and crafting design knowledge into an exploitable form. The merits and shortcomings of the methods used in the experimentation are compared and contrasted; the problems involved in acquiring knowledge in a multiple expert environment are discussed.

摘要:
The development of a user oriented knowledge based system (KBS) for use in the conceptual design of bridges is described. Conceptual bridge design has been found to be an appropriate subject for the development of a KBS, as it is mainly based on heuristics and personal judgement and therefore depends greatly on the experience of the engineer. The system has been developed using an interactive and detailed knowledge elicitation (KE) process, for a limited domain with the unusual feature of several experts being involved to cover the same domain. This KE process has resulted in the development of a prototype, which is currently being verified by the experts used for the KE, independent experts and potential users. It is shown that the experience gained from the development, implementation and verification of the system is of relevance to the creation of future KBS, particularly within the engineering environment.

摘要:
The basic input data for any vehicle routing models are travel time, distances, and cost between nodes in the network. Information on these basic data is not always accurate, since many factors affect the condition of vehicle travel. Travel time on an urban road network may be considered ‘fuzzy’, since its estimate is often subjective and it can be controlled by the driver to some extent. Developing vehicle routes, hence, must incorporate the fuzziness of travel time in the network. In this paper, a vehicle routing model which treats travel times between nodes as a ‘fuzzy’ number is introduced. Assuming that all the travel times between nodes are fuzzy numbers, the proposed model follows the principles of the classical Clarke-Wright algorithm to develop a set of vehicle routes. The examples presented show that the route pattern of each vehicle varies considerably with the degree of fuzziness of travel time. This suggests that depending upon the dispatcher's level of confidence about the travel time, different vehicle route patterns can be developed.

摘要:
The effect of geometrical changes of symmetric rigid-jointed portal frames on their natural frequencies is analysed. Discussed are the following issues: (a) the sensitivity of the frequencies to selected shape variables; (b) the variation of the three lowest frequencies ω1, ω2and ω3as functions of the shape variables in a prescribed domain; and (c) the occurrence of the repeated lowest frequency ω1.

摘要:
An explicit methodology has been developed for use in comprehensive modelling of water distribution networks. The resulting algorithm is able to calculate directly the distribution system operating variables required to exactly meet specified operating conditions. Operating variables include pump speed, control valve settings, pressure regulating valve settings, and settings for flow limiting (pressure sustaining) devices. Specified operating conditions represent stated minimum pressure and volumetric flow requirements at designated locations throughout the distribution system. The proposed algorithm is shown to be robust and efficient, and guaranteed to converge in an expeditious manner. The wide range of capabilities and flexibility of the proposed approach are demonstrated using an example network. Enhancement of real-time modelling is a principal benefit of the methodology.
