摘要:
This paper investigates intermodal rail terminal operations and describes the development of a computerized decision support system to load containers on double-stack trains efficiently. The support system, referred to as the Double Stack Planner (DSP), simulates many tasks performed by rail personnel who manually assign containers to rail car locations. DSP's rule base may be modified to load trains according to a variety of loading strategies, however, all maintain platform and truck load restrictions. Comparisons of these loading strategies illustrate the sensitivity of different criteria to the load quality of a train.

摘要:
This paper reviews some of the theory continuous fuzzy sets or subsets and illustrates, by way of example, an application to project appraisal in land use and transportation planning. In particular, a detailed illustration of the application of continuous fuzzy sets (fuzzy numbers) to the assessment of four alternative routes for a part of a proposed Eastern Corridor between the Cities of Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, is presented.

摘要:
The management of an integrated solid waste system has significantly changed with increasing environmental concerns. Conventional location/allocation models for solid waste management usually incorporate mass balance, capacity limitation, operating, and financial constraints. But the siting of important facilities, such as landfills, incinerators, and transfer stations, in a growing metropolitan region still encounters an explicit limitation: a traffic congestion constraint. The transfer station is the most critical one due to the various loading of different types of incoming and outgoing trucks during the peak hours in the metropolitan region. A mixed integer programming model with the framework of dynamic optimization still can be used efficiently for site selection over time once the traffic congestion constraint is included. The practical implementation of such a model is assessed by a case study of the Kaohsiung solid waste management system in Taiwan. It shows that the incorporation of the traffic congestion constraint does influence the optimal flow pattern in the soldity waste management network.

摘要:
In their natural condition, hydrocollapsible soils exhibit considerable strength. As they become wet, they exhibit considerable collapse, even in the absence of an applied load. The severity of this collapse depends on a variety of factors. One would like to be able to predict the severity of collapse from easily measurable properties of the soil - if not with absolute precision, at least in an approximate, probabilistic way. Using a hydrocollapse measurements database compiled from geotechnical reports on various clays, silts and sands found in the Las Vegas area, we apply linear discriminant analysis to determine the dependence of collapse percentage on four properties: moisture content, load, dry density, and depth. Using this analysis, we give a formula which estimates into which of three predetermined collapse ranges a given sample is most likely to fall, either based on all four properties or based on moisture content and dry density alone. We then derive a novel probabilistic classification rule, which estimates the probability that a soil sample falls into a given collapse range. Although quite simple, this rule uses much more of the information provided by discriminant analysis than does simple deterministic classification.

摘要:
Existing dynamic programming formulations are utilized for the scheduling of serial linear projects. These formulations cannot, however, be used for the scheduling of nonserial linear projects. The intent of this paper is to present a nonserial dynamic programming formulation for the scheduling of linear projects with multiple non-overlapped loop structures. The objective of the nonserial dynamic programming solution is to provide for the selection of resources, interruptions, and lags for production activities that lead to the minimum project duration. The advantages of this nonserial dynamic programming approach include its ability to handle work interruption and variable production rates. In addition, the developed system produces a graphical representation of the project schedule of minimum duration. A nonserial linear project is treated herein using the proposed method.
