摘要:
AbstractThis article explores the extent of distinctiveness and of similarity between the English and other comparable states, in an historical context. The author ranges widely in space and time. He finds likenesses as well as differences between England and such other polities both near and far as Scotland, Denmark, France and Japan. In accounting for English distinctiveness, more emphasis is put on geography, climate and ethos than on more conventional political and economic factors.

摘要:
Abstract:Studies of state formation have focussed on nation states, leaving sub‐national ‘levels’ largely unexamined. In this paper ‘local state formation’ is introduced to draw attention to geographic variation and historical change in struggles to represent or challenge power relations through political forms. By examining one city over time, the raced, gendered and classed character of social relations and identities consituted through local state formation will be mad

摘要:
AbstractIn colonial orders the most impoverished and least powerful subordinates had few opportunities to store their images of the past in forms traditionally used by historians. In this essay I explore historical interpretations of the 1763 Berbice slave rebellion presented in three rituals, the majority of whose participants are impoverished residents of rural Guyanese communities. I contrast the issues addressed in these images with those addressed in accounts of the rebellion presented in colonial and post‐colonial accounts written by the colonizers and the colonized. The focus of my description and analysis is the relation between historical accounts and the social identities of those who produce the

摘要:
AbstractRelations of several notions of historical understanding to issues of explanation, historical complexity, practical and moral reason, and the differentiation of historical and natural science are discussed. Examination of the historical context of the GermanMethodenstreitexhibits similarities with current disjunctions within historical sociology and allows specification of crucial questions about its methods and cognitive goals. Max Weber and Wilhelm Dilthey are discussed as proponents of radically opposed methodological positions. Claims about Weber's reliance on Dilthey are dispelled as it is shown that Weber neither developed nor practiced a ‘method’ ofverstehen, while Weber's congruence with Heinrich Rickert is upheld. Oppositions within historiography (Droysen vs.Buckle) and economics (Schmoller vs. Menger) are analyzed as prefigurations of the Weber‐Dilthey rivalry. Finally, contemporary historical strategies are summarized with reference to pertinent issues extracted from earlier de
