摘要:
SummaryThis paper examines the current handicapping systems for team golf competitions. Ambrose, foursomes, Canadian foursomes and Pinehurst events are analysed. Statistical models are built to capture the stochastic features of these events, and to allow new handicapping systems to be developed. Some substantial discrepancies between the new and the old systems are noted.

摘要:
SummaryA diagnostic technique is proposed to detect major gene effects and other systematic departures from a model for the trait means in the presence of outliers. The technique is based on the examination of residuals from fitting variance components models to quantitative pedigree data using robust statistical procedures. The approach is demonstrated using the total ridge count and ridge count of the middle finger from 54 extended families affected with the Fragile X syndrome, and a sample of 217 normal pedigrees.

SummaryRobust M‐estimators of intraclass correlation coefficient, location and scale parameters are defined for familial data. It is shown that these estimators are strongly consistent. Also the asymptotic distributions of these estimators are derived when the underlying distribution is elliptically and permutationally symmetri

摘要:
SummaryThe literature on the sampling properties of the inequality restricted and pre‐test estimators typically assumes a properly specified model and focuses on the estimation of the regression coefficient vector. In this paper, we derive and evaluate the risk functions of these estimators for both the prediction vector and the disturbance variance in a model which is mis‐specified through the exclusion of relevant regressors. The results suggest that unrestricted estimation is generally preferable to pre‐testing or naively imposing restric

摘要:
SummaryRegular parametric families are commonly encountered in statistical problems (e.g. Cox&Hinkley, 1974). In this paper, we propose a differential geometric framework for the embedded models in these families. Our framework may be regarded as an extension of that presented by Bates&Watts (1980) for nonlinear regression models. As an application, we use this geometric framework to derive three kinds of improved approximate confidence regions for the parameter and parameter subsets in terms of curvatures. The results obtained by Hamiltonet al.(1982) and Hamilton (1986) are extended to embedded models in regular parametric families.

摘要:
SummaryIf an integer‐valued random variable can be represented as a sum of independent random variables, then powerful tools exist to derive approximations to its distribution. We apply this idea to examples in some of which it is not clear how to give a physical interpretation to the independent sum‐mands. We consider bounds on the accuracy of single term approximations, Edgeworth expansions and saddlepoint approximations for both individual probabilities and cumulative probabilit

SummaryLetX1Y1,…,Ynbe independent random variables. We characterize the distributions ofXandYjsatisfying the equation {X+Y1++Yn}=dX, where {Z} denotes the fractional part of a random variableZ.In the case of full generality, eitherXis uniformly distributed on [0,1), orYjhas.a shifted lattice distribution andXis shift‐invariant. We also give a characterization of shift‐invariant distributions. Finally, we consider some special cases of this equ

摘要:
SummaryLetX1,…,Xnbe random variables symmetric about θ from a common unknown distribution Fθ(x) =F(x–θ). To test the null hypothesisH0:θ= 0 against the alternativeH1:θ>0, permutation tests can be used at the cost of computational difficulties. This paper investigates alternative tests that are computationally simpler, notably some bootstrap tests which are compared with permutation tests. Of these the symmetrical bootstrap‐f test competes very favourably with the permutation test in terms of Bahadur asymptotic efficiency, so it is a very attractive a
