摘要:
SummaryThe paper proposes a model to describe marks as awarded to students who select and sit for examinations in a subset of the courses offered. For each subject a linear transformation of the raw marks is sought so as to place all marks on a common scale. In this guise, the set‐up reduces to a simple linear model with multiplicative interaction term, totally lacking in balance as would result from experimental design practice.A variety of methods of estimating the linear transformation parameters is describe

摘要:
SummaryA method is given for constructing row and column designs for situations where replicates are contiguous. Designs of this type are needed in cotton variety trials. A table of generating arrays is given from which a series of resolvable designs can be constructed; these designs are called latinized α‐designs. Some results from cotton variety trials are present

摘要:
SummaryIn this paper we present two new classes of estimators of parameters of regular variation, one based on the empirical distribution function and the other on the empirical characteristic function. They achieve the same rates of mean square error convergence as the estimators proposed by Hall (1982). The estimator based on the empirical characteristic function, unlike the other estimators, utilises the whole sample and not just a few extreme order statistics.

摘要:
SummaryIn this paper we investigate the relationship between the quantiles of a sum of independent continuous random variables and those of its components. Results concerning this relationship are given for the special cases of symmetric distributions, gamma distributions, and for the difference of identically distributed random variables.

摘要:
The problem of estimation of the total weight of objects using a singular spring balance weighing design with non‐homogeneity of the variances of errors has been dealt with in this paper. Based on a theorem by Katulska (1984) giving a lower bound for the variance of the estimated total weight, a necessary and sufficient condition for this lower bound to be attained is obtained. It is shown that weighing designs for which the the lower bound is attainable, can be constructed from the incidence matrices of (α1,.,αt)‐resolvable block designs, α‐resolvable block designs, singular group divisible designs, and semi‐regular group divisib

摘要:
A moment identity based on the concept of weighted distributions is presented. The identity has potential applications to problems involving the manipulation of expectations of functions of random variables. Several examples, mainly concerning the evaluation of the risk of shrinkage estimators of several parameters, are given.

摘要:
SummaryRobust methods are proposed for testing whether several directional distributions on the unit p‐sphere have comparable dispersions. The families of distributions considered are the Langevin for random vectors, and the Generalised Scheidegger‐Watson for random axes, with specific interest in the Fisher and Watson distributions on the sphere. The methods are analogues of Levene's procedure for comparing variances of normal distributi

摘要:
SummaryFor positive‐valued random variables, the paper provides a sequence of upper bounds for the harmonic mean, theith of these bounds being exact if and only if the random variable is essentiallyi‐valued. Sufficient conditions for the convergence of the bounds to the harmonic mean are given. The bounds have a number of applications, particularly in experimental design where they may be used to check how close a given design is toA‐opti
