IfMis a von Neumann algebra acting on a Hilbert spaceH, thenMis said to be in standard form if there is a conjugate linear involutionJonHsuch thatJMJ=M′ andJaJ=a*for alla∈M∩M′. It is proved thatMis in standard form if and only if there exists a family {ξα} inHwhich is cyclic both forMandM′ and such that the spaces {Mξα} are mutually orthogonal, as well as the spaces {M′ξα}. This is a generalization of the corresponding result for σ‐finite von Neumann algebras in which case the family {ξα} is replaced by a single vector ξ.

By analogy with the case of closed manifolds inEnwe consider the (extrinsic) Lipschitz‐Killing curvature of an immersion of a compact manifold with boundary. For this purpose the unit normal bundle has to be replaced by the union of the unit normal bundle of the interior and the “outer” unit normal bundle of the boundary. We prove theorems of the Chern‐Lashof type (cf. [4]) and other necessary conditions for the topological structure of a manifold admitting an immersion with small total absolute curvature, and the Gauss‐Bonnet theorem.
