AbstractThe effects of environmental enrichment and isolation on cortical weight and learning ability were measured in mice from lines selectively bred for high and low brain weight and from an unselected control line from the same foundation population. Animals from these selected lines differed not only on brain weight, but on discrimination task performance as well. Isolated and enriched animals did not differ in cortical weight, nor was there any significant interaction of rearing conditions with lines. Those animals reared in enrichment were superior to those reared in isolation, both for initial acquisition and for number of reversal tasks performed on a water maze discrimination task. High brain weight animals did not differ from low brain weight animals on initial acquisition across treatment conditions. However, high brain weight animals made significantly more reversals within the testing period. The high, control, and low brain weight animals did not order themselves linearly on the behavioral measures: control line animals performed poorest for both initial acquisition and number of reversals.

AbstractThree techniques are generally described as creating a state of undernutrition in the young rat: large litter size, periodic mother‐litter separation, and early weaning. Evidence from studies of maternal behavior and early experience suggests that many of the effects seen in „nutritional deprivation”︁ experiments may be due, in part, to the social, thermal and sensory deprivation coincident with maternal deprivation, or to other factors (such as handling) which are often confounded with maternal deprivation. These other variables must be systematically accounted for before assumptions can be made about the effects of undernutrition

AbstractInfant female mice who were exposed to the odor of adult male mice of the same strain in the presence or absence of the mother were compared with mice who were not exposed with respect to maturation, open‐field behavior, and reproductive success. Exposure lasted 4 hr daily during days 4–18 post‐partum. No significant differences were found between the groups in their rates of growth or the age of ear, eye, and vaginal opening. AbstractThe levels of taurine in brain, heart, liver, kidney, spleen, muscle, and blood of rabbit were determined during development. Taurine was found to be present in a very high concentration at birth and to decrease during maturation in all parts studied except heart.

AbstractFemale mice of the BALB/c and C57BL/6 strains were exposed to ionizing radiation60Co at a rate of 89 R/hr for 15 days of the gestation period (total dose 320 R). Control animals were sham‐irradiated and the offspring produced were tested at 30 or 105 days of age for open‐field behavior and avoidance conditioning. The magnitude of the prenatal irradiation effect was found to be both strain and sex specific: the open‐field activity of irradiated BALB/c mice of both sexes and irradiated C57BL/6 males was significantly higher than that of control animals; the avoidance conditioning of irradiated BALB/c males was greater than that of any other group. AbstractRetrieval by lactating and virgin mice was compared in a straight alley and a T‐maze. In both test situations the retrieval performance of the lactating mouse was superior to that of the virgin animal.
