摘要:
SynopsisAn account is given of the abdominal respiratory structures inAnisops pellucensandA. debilis(Notonectids common in small bodies of water in Uganda), which contain haemoglobin in specialised cells in the abdomen. The dive characteristics of these water bugs are described and compared with those of species that lack haemoglobin. Modifications of the dive brought about by the introduction of carbon monoxide are examined. The possible adaptive significance of the invasion of the midwater zone and the adoption of a pelagic existence by the Anisopinae is discussed.
