摘要:
Abstract:This article attempts to show that theories of masculinities bring a useful framework to the study of men in prison. Two main aspects of classic prison sociology are explored in terms of theories of masculinities. It is first suggested that the concept of solidarity and an unwritten code between prison inmates is similar to the male bonding described in other forms of fratriarchies, such as shopfloor cultures. It is then suggested that the hierarchies among men in prison described by prison sociologists are directly related to, and perhaps a function of, the power relations of hegemonic masculinity. This paper is not intended to offer a complete analysis of the application of theories of masculinities to prison sociology; rather, the intention is to suggest the potentials of the former to add to interpretions of the latter.

摘要:
Abstract:Guideline judgments in English sentencing have been subjected to little scrutiny by criminologists. This article provides a cognitive psychological perspective on one particularly important guideline judgment, Regina v. Billam and Others which concerns the sentencing of rapists. The authors analyse Billam's internal logic, the kind of sentencing practice prescribed and how the guideline is being applied. A sample of post‐Billam cases where a sentence for rape was appealed is analysed and the results reported. The authors conclude that in appealed rape cases the Court of Appeal appears to have scaled its sentences apparently unconstrained by the Billam scaling implication

摘要:
Abstract:This paper reviews the general trends in social work effectiveness research, including the results of experiments, pre‐post comparisons and client opinion studies published in the last 40 years. This broad approach is taken in the belief that the experience of colleagues practising in equally challenging fields will be of some interest to probation officers and staff engaged in juvenile justice work since the methods under test are in widespread use throughout the services. Next, studies of more direct relevance to the criminal justice sector are highlighted, and finally, the (sometimes uncomfortable) implications for practice, management and training are examin

摘要:
Abstract:This article gives an account of the compensatory work programme in the province of Québec, Canada, which is a success in the sense that, to a certain extent, it checked admissions for non‐payment of fines (the flow), and improved the quality of justice administration, but it has had no perceptible impact on the prison stock. It also discusses the danger of the political discourse and that of agencies that have an immediate interest in painting a glowing picture of the savings that would be realised by such programmes in reducing the prison populat

摘要:
Abstract:This article considers some of the difficulties encountered by those seeking to develop a collaborative approach to the prevention of crime. It reflects on the vagueness and elasticity of the concept of crime prevention which, beyond the common sense appeal, encapsulates a variety of different and not necessarily complementary discourses. The multi‐agency approach seeks to force these discourses together, but the context of collaboration is such that certain discourses find themselves in a more privileged position, and others find it difficult to establish themselv

摘要:
Abstract:Conditional bail was introduced to decrease the number of defendants remanded in custody. For this reason it has largely been ignored by researchers as any criticism of the operation of conditional bail may result in an increase in the numbers remanded in custody. However, research carried out in South Wales has highlighted some problems with its use, most notably its inconsistent and, arguably, excessive use.
