Abstract:This paper examines critically the concept of social diagnosis as it operated in the English probation system from the 1930s to the 1960s. It has a particular focus on probation officers9 social enquiry reports for the criminal courts as best exemplifying the diagnostic ideal in action, and illustrative examples of such reports are produced for each of the four decades.

Abstract:This paper discusses changes in British policing focussing on the ‘seventies’ to the ‘eighties’. Data are drawn from several field studies of the author, as well as secondary analysis of media reports and other research reports. The analysis is organised around police structure, Junction and image and discusses changed political context in which policing now stands. The paper concludes with an overview of four issues of future importance in British policing, scientific management, technology, public trust and crime
