AbstractSalmonella typhimuriumstrain 4a is a temperature sensitive mutant with defects in both septation and separation. The separation lesion was reversed by phenethylalcohol but this agent failed to allow septation or growth at restrictive temperature. Organisms of strain 4a grown at 42 °C were, unlike the parental strain, resistant to lysis by lysozyme plus EDTA and lipopolysaccharide was poorly extracted by EDTA from cultures of strain 4a grown at 42 °C. Such cultures may, therefore, be resistant to lysis with lysozyme plus EDTA not because the murein is altered but because the EDTA fails to permeabilize the outer membrane to lysozyme. In confirmation of this, murein isolated from strain 4a after growth at 42 °C showed the same sensitivity to lysozyme as murein from the parental strain. Abstracto‐Aminobenzoic acid (OABA, anthranilic acid) and related compounds which are known to stimulate the biosynthesis of streptothricin‐type antibiotic nourseothricin byStreptomyces nourseiJA 3890b were found to increase strongly the NADH/NAD+ ratio in growing mycelium of this strain suggesting that these effectors are capable of interfering with the function of the respiratory chain. In parallel, a complex shift of metabolism was induced shown by simultaneous alteration of mycelial activities of alanine dehydrogenase, glutamine synthetase, and glutamate dehydrogenase. AbstractNitrogen‐fixation by two species ofNostoc, one of them a lichen phycobiont, was generally stimulated by low concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, nickel, lead, palladium, and zinc. Higher concentrations (0.025 to 0.125 ppm) of arsenic, nickel, and palladium were also stimulatory; however, higher concentrations of cadmium, lead, and zinc tended to inhibit fixation. AbstractThe adamantanamine derivative 1‐[p‐(methylnitrosamino)‐benzylidenamino]‐adamantane (MBAA) at a concentration of 40 μg/ml demonstrated no effect on adsorption of fowl plague virus (FPV) on chick embryonal cells. The penetration of the virions took place by means of pinocytosis. In the final stages of penetration the virions became gradually disintegrated. Under the influence of MBAA, after break‐down of the membrane of pinocytic vesicles a swollen part of the virus core remained in cytoplasm. The morphologically visible replication stages were completely blocked by MBAA. From these results it was concluded that the antiviral action of MBAA most probably depends on a block of virus replication between the final stages of the penetration process and the beginning of production of virus specific structura
