AbstractThe fermentation and isolation procedures of the antibiotic granatomycin produced byStreptomyces lateritiusare described. Furthermore, the producing strain ZIMET 43627 and the main constituents of granatomycin will be characterized. Granatomycin is a red‐violet pigment antibiotic of the naphthoquinone type. The physicochemical properties of granatomycin resemble those of granaticin. The antibiotic can be isolated from culture filtrates and from the mycelium by extraction with lower aliphatic alcohols. It can be purified by gel filtration methods. Granatomycin displays antimicrobial activity, particularly against grampositive and gramnegative bacteria, and antiviral activity against fowl‐plaque‐virus in mammalian cells. Granatomycin is useful in selection of resistant mutants of bacteria and viruses with decreased virulence but high immunogenity suitable for use as life vaccines against infection diseases. The physicochemical properties of the main constituents of granatomycin studied confirm the identity of granatomycin C with granaticin and the identity of granatomycin D with dihydrogranaticin. Granatomycin A is identical with the well‐known semisynthetic methylester of dihydrogranaticin. AbstractDie Hauptprodukte der Glucose‐Fermentation vonP. multocida‐Stämmen sind unter den getesteten Bedingungen Pyruvat, Succinat, Formiat, Acetat und Äthanol. Diese Substanzen entstehen aus Hexosen und Pentosen, wobei nach Einsatz radioaktiver Monosaccharide (geprüft wurden 1‐, 6‐, U‐14C‐D‐Glc, 6‐3H‐D‐Glc, l‐14C‐Man, U‐14C‐Rib und U‐14C‐Xyl) die Radioaktivität in unterschiedlichem Maße in den Endprodukten auftritt. Anhand der Ergebnisse lassen sich als Hauptwege des Monosaccharid‐Abbaus vonP. multocidader Hexosemonophosphatweg, der Pentosephosphat‐ und der Citratzyklus feststellen.Die für eine repräsentative Stammauswahl gesicherte Endproduktbildung (Fehlen von Lactat, vermehrte Anreicherung von Pyruvat, Formiat und Succinat, Bildung von Acetat und Äthanol) kann zur Taxonomie der SpeciesP. multocidaherangezogen werden.Mit der Bildung vonca. 250 μMol Säureäquivalenten aus 100 μMol d‐Glucose gleicht die Carbon‐säure‐Bildung der Methylrot‐negativen SpeciesP.

AbstractThe paper is concerned with the question of whether Weigle‐reactivation (WR) and Weigle‐mutagenesis (WM) can be indirectly induced by infection with UV‐irradiated phage. Experiments neither with phage λ ofEscherichia colinor with phage χ ofSerratia marcescensshow such induction‐In this respects phage DNA differs from F′‐DNA or Hfr‐DNA; possible explanations are discussed.In both systems clear plaque mutations can also be induced by UV without irradiation of the host cells; they appear, in unirradiated and irradiated host cells, with an increase in frequency which is greater than proportional to the UV dose. It is concluded that mutation induction of phage in the unirradiated host cells is due to a low level constitutive mutagenic repair; this could either be due to “spontaneous” induction of the mutagenic SOS‐function or it could be a mechanism different from this one. Host irradiation would give rise to additional activity by the induced SOS‐function leading to WR and WM.It is further concluded that deviation of the induction kinetics from a linear dose‐dependence is not due to the necessary i
