AbstractThe characteristics of ten N2(C2H2)‐fixingBacillusstrains, isolated from Egyptian soils, were investigated. The isolates were not completely identical to any of the described species in the 8th Edition of Bergey's Manual. However, two strains were closely related toB. cereus, five strains were tentatively characterized asB. licheniformisand three strains with swollen sporangia and thick‐walled endospores shared their main characteristics withB. circulans.A comparison between these bacilli and other known nitrogen‐fixingBacillusspecies revealed major differences in culture characteristics and C2H2‐reducing activities. This suggests that theBacillusisolates described here are new nitrogen‐fixing

AbstractBacterial virus T3 undergoes host‐controlled modification which is not based on “classical” processes of DNA modification and restriction. The adsorption and thus the growth of T3 onEscherichia coliW cells (E. coliK12 derivative) decisively depends on the host strain on which the virus was previously propagated. Depending on the modification conferred to the virus by its last host, its efficiency of plating (e.o.p.) onE. coliW varies by six orders o magnitude between 10−7and 10−1. This does not reflect the appearance of T3 host‐range mutants, but a fully reversible modification of genotypically unchanged T3 wild‐type phage.The behaviour of T3 in the described host system constitutes a second case of so‐called nonclassical modification and restriction (KRÜGERet al.1977, Molec. gen. Genet. 153, 107–110) of bacteriophages, Non‐classical modification (protein modification) is additive to and independent of DNA modification and restriction as demonstrated with theocr−phage T3/R7. – Furthermore, our results suggest that the adsorption specificity of T3 is determined by at least two independent genetic factors; in both of these fa

摘要:
AbstractAspects of the morphology, metabolism and physiology of two oligocarbophilic strains ofHyphomicrobium(H4K and S5K), isolated from the Plußsee, were studied. Both strains are able to grow on mineral salts media without added organic carbon sources. Strain H4K grows well even in double distilled water. The two strains cannot grow on mineral media in the absence of atmospheric CO2. No growth occurred also in air purified of organic carbon, in spite of the presence of CO2. On the contrary, there is good growth in the presence of some organic compounds and without atmospheric CO2,i.e., heterotrophic metabolism without CO2assimilation is possible. Growth was enhanced in a methanol atmosphere, and by the addition of yeast extract, methylamine, peptone and glucose. In nutrient solutions containing acetate or formate as carbon source, growth of H4K begins only after an adaptation period ofca. 4 weeks

AbstractThe growth‐temperature relations and thermal tolerance of the asexual spores of thermophilic fungi commonly found in composting plant materials were determined.The optimum temperature range for germination of the spores was 40°–50°C. The spores ofHumicola lanuginosa(Griffon and Maublanc) Bunce were able to survive 60 min exposure to 68°C while those ofMucor pusillusCooney and Emerson survived only 5 min exposure to 68°C. A determination of the thermal death rates of the spores at 65°C showed a rapid loss of viability of those ofTorula thermophilaCooney and Emerson. AbstractForS. aureusisolates of different ecological origin, MIC‐values for HgCl2and CdSO4were determined on a synthetical medium. Only strains from outbreaks of suppurative infections in hospitals were resistent to mercury, strains from infections in out‐patients, from healthy human nasal carriers, from infections in cattle, sheep, chicken, and pigs were sensitive.Resistance to cadmium occurred in strains from man and from cattle but not in strains from sheep, chicken, and pigs.
