AbstractIt has been tried to adapt the light scattering technique to measure the growth of a filamentous blue‐green algaWestiellopsis profilicaJANET which does not give stable and uniform suspension during its growth in culture vessels. Experiments were conducted to make stable suspensions of the organism and the results on the scattering and spectral studies were compared with that ofMicrocystis sp.which gives a uniform and stable suspension in culture vessels.Some conventional experiments were performed to show that the growth of the blue‐green alga,Westiellopsis prolificadoes not run with the rate of pigment metabolism. It has also been observed that the alterations in size, shape, swelling and shrinkage and average cell characteristics of the alga resulted from alterations in physical and chemical characteristics of the culture media, significantly change the scattering values without much or any change in their growth rate in term of dry weight val

摘要:

Phaseolotoxin (Nδ‐phosphosulfamyl‐ornithyl‐alanyl‐homoarginine) from culture‐supernatants ofPseudomonas syringaepv.phaseolicolaand Nδ‐phosphosulfamylornithine (PSOrn) obtained from phaseolotoxin by treatment with leucine aminopeptidase were compared in regard to their inhibition effects by means of the enzymatic toxin test as well as by bioassay. In the enzymatic toxin test PSOrn exhibits an inhibiting effect five times stronger than that of phaseolotoxin. The maximal inhibition due to PSOrn is also higher. On the other hand, only phaseolotoxin caused growth inhibition in the bioassays used (indicator organisms:Escherichia coli, Euglena gracilis). AbstractAzotobacter vinelandiiwas grown in batch cultures supplied with ammonia as an N‐source and phosphate at limiting concentration. After phosphate depletion the respiratory rate was affected in a characteristic way. The oxygen consumption during growth and the phase following growth was substantially higher than in cultures amply supplied with phosphate. It is suggested that phosphate limitation impairs the oxidative phosphorylation and stimulates the substrate phosphorylation which leads to a higher degree of respiratory NAD(P)H oxidation due to changes in the branched electron transport syste

The presence of 5‐bromouracil (BU) as well as 5‐bromo‐2‐deoxyuridine (BUdR) in the cultivation media of bacteria results in the distinct increase of UV sensitivity. With the nucleic acid base analogue 8‐azaadenine (8‐AA) a similar effect was confirmed, however, not so pronounced. In the experiments reported here the combined action of BU or BUdR and 8‐AA onEscherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Bacillus subtilisandBacillus cereuswas investigated. The sensitization effect of BUdR does not increase if 8‐AA is present additionally during cultivation. On the contrary, a decrease of sensibilization occurs. A chlorosis‐inducing phytoeffector from culture filtrate ofAlternaria alternata(FRIES) KEISSLER, whose mycelium was grown in synthetic media, was isolated with good yields (50 mg/l) and identified as tentoxin. In addition to this compound, purification on Sephadex G‐15 yielded several byproducts with absorbance at 270 nm. This procedure of tentoxin isolation is more effective than traditional ones.
