AbstractConsiderable amounts of amino acids were formed in a mixture containing diammonium hydrogen phosphate, ammonium molybdate, formaldehyde, and mineral salts. Amino acids synthesized in the mixture were glycine, arginine, histidine, aspartic acid, cysteine, and alanine. Under similar conditions the amount of amino acids formed enhanced with the increase in the concentration of diammonium hydrogen phosphate up to 5 to 8 g per 40 ml of the mixture. On increasing the formaldehyde the amount of amino acid formation increased up to 6 ml of formaldehyde in the 80 ml of mixture. Presence of ammonium molybdate, though necessary for the formation of spherical particles in the mixture, did not effect the formation of amino acids.

AbstractUranhaltige Gesteine führen an ihrer Oberfläche Verwitterungs‐Biozönosen von Pilzen und Bakterien, wie sie auch bei anderen Gesteinen vorhanden sind. Pilze und heterotrophe Bakterien lösen geringe Mengen von Uran. Ihr Keimgehalt je g Gestein nimmt ab, wenn das Verwitterungswasser mehr als 200 mg Uran pro Liter enthält. Wesentlich höher kann die Urantoleranz bei Stämmen vonThiobacillus ferrooxidansund besonders vonTh. thiooxidanssein. Die bis jetzt nach Adaptation erreichten Höchstwerte liegen fürTh. thiooxidansbei 12,5 g U/l, fürTh. ferrooxidansbei 1 g U/l als (UO2)SO4. Sind Kupfersulfat und Uranylsulfat in der Lösung vorhanden, so wirken beide Schwermetalle unabhängig voneinander. Die maximalen für jedes Schwermetall getrennt ermittelten Toleranzwerte bleiben unverändert; eine kombinierte Giftwirkung läßt sich

AbstractEs wird untersucht, ob die synchrone Zellteilung vonEscherichia coli15 TAU nach einer stationären Wachstumsphase vom Proteinstoffwechsel (Protein‐turnover) während dieser stationären Phase abhängig ist. Protein‐turnover konnte nur während Glucose‐, nicht jedoch während Arginin‐ oder Uracillimitation gemessen werden (HILLIGERu.BERGTER1973). Bei allen drei Limitationsarten traten synchrone DNS‐Replikationen und synchrone Zellteilungen nach der stationären Phase auf, so daß eine Korrelation zum Proteinstoffwechsel während der stationären Phase nicht wahrscheinlich ist. AbstractMonosaccharide formation resulting from hydrocarbon oxidation byCandida rugosawas determined.C. rugosawas grown in a mineral medium containing 1% alkane (C10‐C17) as sole carbon source. Monosaccharide formation was found on all hydrocarbon substrates tested. A similar result was obtained from fatty acids as intermediate oxidation product of hydrocarbon. An interrelationship between cell growth and formation of monosaccharide was observed in all cases. The amount of monosaccharide withn‐alkane was greater than with 1‐alkene. Also,n‐alkanes of even‐carbon numbers yield approximately 50% more monosaccharide as compared withn‐alkanes of odd‐carbon numbers. The optimal substrates for monosaccharide formation weren‐dodecane and tetradecane. These yields were 170.7 and 181 μg/ml culture broth, respectively. The monosaccharide formed fromn‐alkane oxidation was D‐glucose as determined by thin‐layer chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. AbstractEffect of nitrate reduction on fermentation products ofClostridium perfringenswas investigated in nutrient media containing glucose. Butyrate, acetate, lactate, and ethanol were produced in the absence of nitrate. Addition of nitrate caused disappearance of butyrate and marked decrease in ethanol amounts as well as nitrite accumulation. Acetate was the main product in this case. Formation of hydrogen, equimolar to carbon dioxide, was ceased by nitrate reduction. Molar growth yield and growing rate of cells were not changed in nitrate reduction.

AbstractAnhand der vonHEYER(1966) aus Erdölschlamm isolierten,n‐Alkane assimilierenden Stämme der farblosen AlgeProtothecawurde die ArtPrototheca hydrocarbonea n. sp.beschrieben. Als Typus gilt der nunmehr unter der Nummer CCY 70‐1‐1 in die Tschechoslovakische Sammlung für Hefen (Chemisches Institut der Slovakischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Bratislava, ČSSR) aufgenommene Stamm S6c. Die neue Art unterscheidet sich neben weiteren Merkmalen vor allem durch die Größe der Autosporen, Wachstum bei +42 °C sowie Assimilation von Xylose und Inosit von den anderen Arten der Gattung. AbstractDie Hitzeaktivierung von endotroph beeinflußten sog.| Tris‐, Ca‐, Mg‐ und Mn‐Sporen vonB. stearothermophilusHU 34 ergab für das durch Koloniezählung gemessene Auswachsen bzw. für die durch Abnahme der optischen Dichte ermittelte Keimung signifikante Unterschiede in der Aktivierungsantwort.Die Ca‐Sporen wiesen für das Auswachsen mit einem Gipfel von 150% bei 12 min/115°C die quantitativ mit Abstand höchste Aktivierung auf.Der prozentuale OD‐Verlust nach 30 min in einem komplexen Medium bei 110, 115 und 120°C ergab für die Maxima der Ca‐Sporen gegenüber denen der anderen Sporenvarianten eine Position, die bei einer durchschnittlich 50% geringeren Aktivierungszeit lag. AbstractPassaging ofClaviceps paspalialkaloid‐producing strains leads to degenerative morphological changes which seem to be responsible for a reduction of alkaloid production. It was shown that cultures ofClaviceps paspaliconsist of two types of colonies on a PDA medium: small‐brown and large‐white ones, the first existing mainly in early passages and the latter appearing in successive passages.
