A study of geographic variation in three subspecies of garter snake(Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis, T. s. parietalis, T. s. semifasciata)in the north‐central United States indicates patterns of irregular non‐clinal microgeographic variation for 40 characters of coloration, scalation, and internal anatomy. Multivariate analyses show that geographically close populations are not always phenetically close and that overall differentiation of the phenotype is greater in males than in females. The generic limits within the Aglajidae are reviewed and modified, based on the study of 21 species.NavanaxPilsbry, 1895 is reinstated as a genus distinct fromAglaja.The generic placement of several species is altered from previous works. An evaluation of morphological characters suggests that each of six genera has distinctive external morphology. The systematic value of twelve characters is critically reviewed. The evolutionary relationships of the Aglajidae and its genera to other philinacean familes are discussed.

Karyotypes and G band patterns ofThryonomys gregorianus, Pedetes capensisandHystrix cristatafrom Kenya are reported. BothThryonomysandPedeteshave a diploid number of 40 but differ in the overall pattern of their karyotypes and by the presence of a marker chromosome inThryonomys.The marker chromosome unitesThryonomyswith the ctenodactylids. The karyotypeof Hystrix cristata, with a diploid number of 60, bears some resemblance to the African bathyergids andPetromusbut none to the erethizontids. Serolid isopods from soft sediments in three bays off Townsville (Queensland, Australia) are described. On the basis of existing keys they appear to fit into theSerolis minuta‐groupasS. minuta, S. bakeriand S.yongei.Although the first two species seem to be separated bathymetrically there is such a wide variation in the diagnostic characters that separation at the species level may no longer be tenable. Examination of serolids from other Australian localities confirms this view. Diplopallus polymorphus(Rudolphi, 1819) (Cestoda: Acoleidae), hitherto recorded from avocetsRecurvirostra avosettaL. and stiltsHimantopus himantopus(L.) (Recurvirostridae) in Europe, Asia and Africa, is reported for the first time as a parasite ofRecurvirostra americanaGmelin, 1788 andHimantopus mexicanus(Milller, 1776) in the Pacific, Central and Mississippi migratory flyways of North America.D. polymorphusis redescribed, as it shows great intraspecific variation in the number (20–25) and size (0.087‐0.122 mm) of the rostellar hooks and in the position of the cirrus‐sac and relation of the external seminal vesicle to the longitudinal excretory vessels. Protocollagen proline hydroxylase activity was studied in skin and muscle of poikilothermic and homoiothermic animals. Lower PPH activity was found in the former than in the latter. Increased PPH activity was found in skin of youngGallus domesticusandRattus norvegicus.In specialized skin under hormonal control, i.e. comb and wattles, increased activity in relation to sexual maturation was shown. The PPH activity in muscles of poikilotherms was lower than in those of homoiotherms. Some of the muscles had a considerable enzymatic activity. A decreasing PPH activity was noticed in birds and mammals with age. Heart muscle had more hydroxylating activity than skeletal muscle.
