A collection of 41 species of pontoniine shrimp form the Madagascar region is reported upon. Most of the material has been collected from the north‐west of Madagascar in the vicinity of Nosy Bé. Six new species, belonging to four different genera, are described:Palaemonella crosnieri, Periclimenes lepidus, P. granulimanus, P. perturbans, Periclimenaeus lobiferusandOnycocaris trullata. A key to the species ofOnycocarisis also given. Nineteen species are recorded from Madagascar for the first time, and four species,Periclimenes perlucidus, Periclimenaeus djiboutensis, Pontonia sibogaeandCoralliocaris viridisare reported for the second time only in the Indo‐West Pacific region.Pontonides uncigerCalman is considered to be distinct fromP. uncigerHolthuis and also is recorded for the second time only. The records of pontoniine shrimp previously reported from Madagascar are briefly summarized. A total of 61 species are now known to be represented in the fauna of Madagascar, indicating a diversity almost as rich as the Indonesian region, with 69 species.

The growth of the theraphosid spider,Avicularia aviculariaL. was studied principally by taking measurements of the fang length of exuviae and dead specimens. The relatic ships between fang length and increment at ecdysis and fang length and instar duration were investigated and used to construct a projected growth curve for the species. This suggests that males reach sexual maturity in approximately 13 instars and at a minimum age of about two and a half years. In males the adult instar is terminal and rarely lasts more than three months. Reproductive maturity in females is probably not reached earlier than the XIVth instar or three years from birth. The females continue to moult annually after maturity and have a longevity in excess of seven years. The pattern of colouration shows characteristic changes in early immature life and develops a slight sexual dimorphism in adults. Type II urticating hairs are present throughout life and occur in light and dark forms in the IInd instar. The mean length of the urticating hairs increases during the life cycle and a sexual dimorphism develops in the XIIth or XIIth instar. In adult males the urticating hairs are uniformly barbed whereas in the adult females the barbs are restricted to the proximal end.

During the course of an extensive survey of the ecology and systematics of the rotifers from Andhra Pradesh, India, a rotifer species new to science, having characters related to the genera Euchlanis, Dipeuchlanis and Squatinella, has been encountered and described as Pseudoeuchlanis longipedis gen. et sp. nov.
