摘要:
Philaenus spumariusis an insect of wide geographical distribution which has a number of colour morphs. This is a report of an attempt to provide an objective classification of the morphs by direct measurement of some visual characteristics. Distribution of these within the sample did not follow a normal curve but it was not possible to correlate the observed distribution with the subjectively sorted groups. This throws some doubt on the validity of the traditional subjective classification and on deductions based on this.

摘要:
The life stages ofC. crozetensiswhose larvae have raking head‐fans are described. Functional anatomical study of the fans compared with the filtering fans of normal Simuliidae together with SEM study of first instar larvae ofGymnopais, TwinniaandProsimuliumenable the evolution of cephilic fans to be inferred as follows: a group of lateral labral bristles evolved in two directions:1To complete loss inGymnopaisandTwinniawhose ancestors therefore never possessed fully developed fans.2Elaboration of the group of bristles first into raking organs, as inCrozetia, and later into even more complex filtering organs. It is shown that unflexing of Simuliid fans depends on elastic energy stored in resilin‐containing components deformed during flexing.Adults ofCrozetiamate on stones in streams on lie de la Possession, Ties Crozet. The females are non‐biting and rest near streams while their eggs mature, thus forming a sub‐Antarctic parallel to certain sub‐Arctic S

摘要:
Males of seven species of Odonata were studied at a small pool (3.25 m2) in the grounds of the University of Ife. Each species had its characteristic time of arrival at the pool; those arriving early stayed late, and those arriving late left early. The territories held by the males can be divided into two categories‐, “perch and patrol” and “continuous short term aerial”. With the perchers and patrollers it is possible to distinguish a patrol area and a somewhat larger defended area. Forms with red bodies (TrithemisandCrocothemis) defended larger areas than the blue bodiedOrthetrum microstigma. This last species showed variation in the size of territory with the number of males present. No feeding activities were seen in the territories, which appeared to be held only for reproductive purposes. Although there was much intraspecific interaction over the pool there was little or no interspecific interaction, and the territories of different species overlapped considerably in space

摘要:
Lithacrosiphon maldivensisShipley is re‐described from a specimen (Brit. Mus. Nat. Hist. 1974. 2.1) found boring into loose corallogenous rock on the inner reef flat near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The new description reveals randomly scattered single‐pointed hooks on the posterior region of the introvert. It is the first record of the genus from the Red

摘要:
A new series of hoplonemertean from Australia is described and namedGononemertes australiensis. The morphology of this nemertean, which lives commensally in the ascidianPyura pachydermatina(Herdman) varietyintermediaHerdman, is described and illustrated and its taxonomic placing discussed.
