摘要:
A new species of ricinuleid,Ricinoides hansenisp. nov., collected from forested regions of Sierra Leone is described. The description includes comparative morphological details of the larva, protonymph, deutonymph, tritonymph and adults of both sexes. Changes in the proportions of various regions of the body, in tubercle distribution and numbers of tubercles and setae during the different life‐stages are considered. The taxonomic position of the species is discussed, and a key is provided to the eight African species of the genusRicinoide

摘要:
The distribution and orientation ofBalanus crenatusonCarcinus maenasis described.Elminius modestuswas also found on C.maenasbut it was not common. Both species of barnacle were also found onCancer pagurus, although neither species of barnacle appeared to be as common onCanceras onCarcinus.Possible reasons for this are discussed.Treating the carapaces of similar sizedC. maenasas sampling units it is clear that the distribution ofB. crenatusover these sampling units is not random but is aggregated. This probably arises because of the gregarious nature of the cyprids when they settle out but other possibilities are considered.B. crenatuson the carapace ofC. maenasis found exclusively in the grooves and depressions on the carapace and this is because the cyprids preferentially settle in concavities. The orientation ofB. crenatusalso shows a consistent pattern, with the cirral nets facing predominantly backwards. This pattern could arise because the barnacle cyprids orientate to water currents, generated by the exhalant respiratory currents, flowing forwards over the carapace.

摘要:
The discovery of fossil chelid fragments from the Eocene of South America initiated a study of the shells ofHydromedusa maximiliani(Mikan) 1820, andHydromedusa tectiferaCope 1869, the only living species of this genus. These species are poorly documented and ill described with no detailed characterization available for consultation. Our investigation revealed that the nuchal bone ofH. maximilianiis recessed from the anterior border of the carapace, a condition unique amongst chelonians. A number of previously unrecognized characters important for taxonomy at both the generic and species level are also identified and discussed.

摘要:
Tadpoles of the anurans,Adelotus brevis, Limnodynastes peroni, andBufo marinuswere exposed to a range of concentrations of up to ten different herbicides. The Median Tolerance Limit (TL50) was calculated for each toxicant from data obtained by static bioassay. Some adult frogs(Litoria ewingiandLimnodynastes tasmaniensis)were subjected to greater concentrations of several of the toxicants. Toxicity varied greatly among the tadpoles exposed to various toxicants with fenoprop being the most toxic chemical tested, while no differences were observed in behaviour or activity between the exposed and control adult frogs. A significant reduction occurred in the thermal tolerance of one to two week oldA. brevisexposed to subacute dosages of amitrole‐T, picloram, and 2,2‐
