AbstractThe structure and development of stomata in 27 genera and 53 species belonging to the families of the order Polemoniales are described. Nine stomatal types noticed are: anomocytic, anisocytic, actinocytic, staurocytic, diacytic, paracytic, tetracytic, transitional between paracytic and diacytic and stomata with a single subsidiary cell. Three modes of stomatal development observed are: mesogenous, perigenous and mesoperigenous. Stomatal abnormalities seen are: stomata with a single guard cell, arrested development and variously oriented contiguous stomata. The stomata varies in form, number, orientation and arrangement of the subsidiary and also the surrounding cells in different organs of a plant. On the basis of stomatal studies, the splitting of Polemoniales into Polemoniales Boraginales and Solanales is justified. The separation of Ehretiaceae from Boraginaceae is not justifiable.

AbstractTorrential rains (in January 1980) that had suddenly swept a limited area in the eastern desert facing Qena Province (Upper Egypt) resulted in enriching the vegetation of some extremely dry wadies at this location. Vegetation survey carried out shortly after this event (in April) revealed the prevailance of annuals which are hardly recognizable in such usually dry habitats and in considerable abundance. The normally scarce perennial vegetation has flourished too. The investigation reveals that the wadies studied are potential shelters of 3 community types, one of which seems to be a segetal part of an “Alliance” wide‐spread in other wadies of this desert. AbstractTwo desert wadies of contradictory ecological conditions were studied. The water factor seems to be the most critical ecological factor in determining the type of vegetation as well as its richness. In Wadi Gimal, of extremely dry conditions (both climatic and edaphic) a typical xerophytic community dominated byZilla spinosa, Pulicaria undulataandCassia italicawas identified, together with a less xeric (but more tolerant to salinity) community ofTamarix aphylla — Limonium axillareexist in the deltaic part of the wadi near the Red Sea coast. In Wadi El‐Miyah, of fairly rich water resources, 3 communities were identified the species composition of each reflects different degrees of aridity which is related to local physiography in the wadi coarse. These communities are: 1. Community ofSalsola delileana — Francoeuria crispa, 2. Community ofAcacia raddiana — Pergularia tomentosaand, 3. Community ofZygophyllum coccineum — Pulicaria
