AbstractMorphological data were acquired from herbarium and living specimens belonging to 14 native species ofErodium. Specimens were scored for 12 vegetative, 2 inflorescence, 18 floral and 17 fruit characters. The data were analysed using cluster analysis and which enabled the distinction of two main groups:PlumosaandErodium. Plumosagroup is classified into three subgroups:Crassifolea, OxyrrhyncheaandGlaucophyllea, whileErodiumgroup is distinguished into five subgroups viz:Gruinea, Ciconea, Pulverulentea, LaciniateaandCicutarea.

AbstractThe present investigation deals with the epidermal cell, stomatal and trichome complexes of seven species belonging to the Simaroubaceae‐Zygophyllaceae. Stomata are mostly anomocytic and cyclocytic. Anisocytic, staurocytic and hemiparacytic are the associate types. In all eight trichome types are recorded in these taxa of which unicellular trichome types are common in the Simaroubaceae and Zygophyllaceae but the uniseriate trichome types are seen only in the former taxon. The present study further suggests thatBalanitesbe shifted from the Simaroubaceae and placed as a Subfamily – Balanitoideae – in the Zygophyll

AbstractThe leaf epidermal surfaces of nine species ofAspiliaThouars were examined and described. The species are hypoamphistomatic and possess anomocytic and animocytic types, only a few species show the actinocytic type of stomata. The epidermal hairs (non‐glandular) are found and could be of diagnostic value. The nine species fall clearly into two artificial groups on the basis of the cuticular striations observed. The cuticular striations are present inA. bracteosa, A. linearifolia, A. rudis, A. busseiandA. spenceriana; and absent inA. africanavar.africana, A. africanavar.ambigua, A. helianthoides, A. kotschyivar.kotschyi, A. kotschyivar.albaandA. paludosa. Also prickle‐like unicellular hairs occur inA. kotschyivar.alba, A. helianthoidesandA. bracteosa. A key based on epidermal characters is proved for the identification of the species stud

AbstractThe floral anatomy of five taxa of Melastomataceae, namely,Memecylon edule, M. guinensis, M. capitellatum, Rhexia marinaandTabouchina semidecandrahas been studied. The regular, epigynous flowers are tetramerous inMemecylon edule, M. capitellatum, Rhexia marinaand pentamerous inM. guinensisandTabouchina semidecandra. The floral parts as well as their traces show varying degrees of adnation. The septate condition of the ovary inRhexia marinaandTabouchina semidecandraand the presence of rudimentary septa inMemecylon edule, M. guinensisandM. capitellatumreveal that the central placentation in the family is derived from axile or anatomically parietal ancestry. The carpels are 3‐traced inMemecylon edule, M. guinensisandM. capitellatumand 5‐traced in the rest. The style is vascularized by the dorsal bundles inMemecylonspecies and by the common median laterals inRhexia marinaandTabouchina semidecan

AbstractThe features of mature foliar epidermis and stomata are described in eight species ofAlternanthera. They showed diversity as regards the size of the epidermal cells and the nature of anticlinal walls; the stomatal size, frequency, index and basic type also varied. The epidermal cells are generally polygonal or irregular in outline while the anticlinal walls are usually sinuous, occasionally undulate or arched. The stomatal size varied from 20.3 × 13.6 μm (A. bettzichiana) to 37.4 × 18.8 μm (A. philoxeroides). Rather unusually, within the eight taxa examined, the genus showed as many as three basic stomatal types, namely, diacytic, paracytic and anisocy

AbstractNineteen members of the Sapindaceae have been screened for their foliar flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, saponins and alkaloids. The family is heterogeneous in its chemical constitution. The Aceraceae and Hippocastanaceae are merged with the Sapindaceae. The intra‐familial classification of the Sapindaceae by Radlkofer gains support from the chemical data.Dodoneais found to be very distinct from the rest of the family and therefore the creation of a separate subfamily Dodoneoideae is suggested.Filicium decipiensfinds a proper place in this famil
