There is increasing evidence that the development of the frontal lobes is a prolonged multi stage process continuing into adolescence. Research has indicated that damage to the frontal lobes may be detected from infancy. Downward extensions of tests from adult neuropsychology are not always suitable for use with infants and young children. There is a need to use tests in the routine neuropsychological assessment of children that have originated in cognitive developmental research. Executive and frontal functions are implicated in learning disabilities and several psychiatric disorders and therefore should be tested more frequently in clinical assessment.

This paper offers an overall guide to the Internet and more specifically describes what is available to psychologists, psychiatrists and other professionals in child mental health. Ways in which the Internet can be accessed are outlined and comment is made on the place of the Internet in the future of child psychiatry and psychology. A glossary of terms used in this article is provided.

This review article considers the clinical significance and management of chronic constipation and soiling in children. Difficulties in determining the epidemiology and co‐ morbidity are considered. A historical perspective integrating paediatric and psychological thought is provided. Various perspectives and treatment modalities for chronic constipation and soiling are reviewed with particular emphasis on psychological approaches for the management of resistant, ‘psychosomatic’ children. What is the extent of personal legal liability of professionals carrying out investigation and assessment in cases involving child protection? In cases where their advice has been incorrect, or where the Court decision does not support their conclusions, can they be held liable by the child or parents involved? These questions were considered recently by the House of Lords, whose judgement will have important implications for professionals who work with children and families. Their Lordships decided that psychiatrists and other professionals involved in child protection cases are not personally liable. The principle of witness immunity was extended to cover any professional who gives advice either in the context of or in contemplation of court proceedings. In the child protection area, local authorities will not be liable either directly or as the employers of professionals.Peggy Ray, a solicitor specialising in children's cases and member of the Children's Panel of the Law Society, spells out the legal implications of the judgement.Judith Trowell, a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist and experienced expert witness, discusses the implications for clinicians undertaking expert witness work.
