This paper explores the attrition of different aspects of Swedish grammar. Empirical data from five bilingual expatriate students, who have lost parts of their first language due to a deactualization of Swedish, are compared to data from monolingual Swedish aphasic patients. The results indicate that some aspects of the grammar may be more affected than others in language attrition. The bilingual students' noun phrase morphology had undergone attrition, but not their word order. The examples from the aphasics displayed the opposite pattern: for them, word order attrition was combined with unaffected noun phrase morphology. Attrition of Swedish grammar is also discussed in relation to markedness conditions.

The paper focuses on the similarities and differences between the rhetorical structure of some Slavonic (Russian and Bulgarian) and English scientific texts. The aim of the study is to test the widely accepted assumption that scientific discourse has universal features which are language‐independent. In applied linguistics, interest in student beliefs (or metacognitive knowledge) about second language acquisition (SLA) is fairly recent, growing out of the emphasis on learner autonomy and on learner strategies in SLA. The purpose of this paper is to review those few studies that have been published so far, to give an outline of definitions of beliefs and research methodology, and finally to provide alternatives to these, based on recent developments in the social sciences. With a reconsideration of beliefs come reconsiderations of research data and methods.

The purpose of this study was to devise and validate an index of texture that could be used easily and accurately to analyze texts – especially those of developing writers – as an aid in improving readability in education and business settings, among others. Texture is defined as a synergistic combination of conjunction, conjunctive reach, specificity, connectivity, topic, and topic shift. An index reflecting these six indexicals was devised. The index was used to measure the texture of four expository texts, which were then subjected to the judgements of nineteen expert judges, comprising the English departments of two universities. Results indicated a perfect correlation in rankings produced by the index and by the judges. Furthermore, a high level of concordance was found to exist among the rankings of the individual judges. It is concluded that the six indexicals reflect those elements of texture that interpreters perceive as crucial to texturing in such texts.
