摘要:
This paper provides an initial review of social scientific research on the causes and effects of alcohol use and abuse. We argue that such work is, in general, overly psycho‐individualistic in its theoretical and social policy orientations. Yet alcohol issues have, with few exceptions, been ignored in communication and sociolinguistic studies, even though these overlapping disciplines have the analytic resources to give an integrated socially‐grounded account of the dynamics of drinking use and abuse. The paper therefore provides a framework and an explicit set of agenda for exploring some of the fundamental and everyday sociolinguistic and communicative dimensions of drinking, with attention to their implications for drinking and driving practice and anti‐drink‐driving ca

摘要:
Minority language communities may suffer from many different types of disadvantage. One problem that they may face is the failure or refusal of majority communities to recognise their language as a language rather than a dialect. The degree to which minority languages are vulnerable to this kind of attack depends to a considerable extent on their linguistic characteristics. In investigating this kind of vulnerability, it is helpful to consider Kloss's distinction between Abstand and Ausbau languages. This distinction is also helpful in achieving a better understanding of other political and cultural problems concerning language vs. dialect status in modern Europe.

摘要:
In Norwegian, the third‐person singular pronoun is specified for gender, the masculine varianthanbeing used for males and the feminine varianthoorhunfor females.Hanwas traditionally used generically and sex‐indefinitely. For ideological reasons, this usage has been opposed in recent years. At first, the Norwegian Language Council introduced a set of new guidelines for avoiding the use of generic and sex‐indefinitehanin school textbooks. After having second thoughts, the Council decided that the feminine pronoun should be accepted in these contexts, even if such a usage is at variance with the linguistic rules and at the same time introduces a new pattern of discrimination. The stages in the development of the policy are sketched out and new information presented about usage in generic and sex‐indefinite contexts today. On the basis of this information, a comparison is made between the usage in textbooks and in various other kinds of literature. A possible scenario for the future is discussed in the con

摘要:
“Publish in English or perish!” has become a slogan frequently heard in non‐English‐speaking academic contexts all over the world. For many nations, proficiency in spoken and written English has become a must. But achieving such proficiency involves problems and hard work. This paper discusses some of the intercultural problems ofwriting academic Englishin a non‐English context, namely in Finland. A further issue addressed in this paper is the training of language teachers to teach writing courses in academic English in such a context. It is argued that before such courses are designed for academic non‐native writers and for teachers of such writers, it is essential to conduct textlinguistic research into the cultural and linguistic differences in writing practices which exist between the source and target languages. As will be shown, such textlinguistic research gives us vital information on cohesion and coherence problems that non‐native writers of English have in areas such as thematic patternings, reference and connectors. The results show that for linguists, as well as for teachers and writers, textlinguistics offers convenient tools for analysing, understanding, and correcting intercultural linguistic problems in writing. Furthermore, the results of the analyses feed directly into the design of academic writing courses in English for non‐native writers and into the training of teachers f

摘要:
According to the prior assumption that a L2 is acquired by being used as a tool for doing things with others, this article is devoted to an attempt to analyse certain mechanisms which teacher and pupils use in order to build up the meaning of their interaction in the target language. More precisely, it is postulated that it becomes feasible to use a language which the pupils do not yet know because the process of making meaning in this L2 is presented as a social process, initially other‐regulated, in which the joint action undertaken with all the classmates is so organized that it can be used cooperatively as a first shared indexical territor
