A study was conducted concerning counselor employment and compensation practices in 115 public school districts, selected by criteria of relatively high salaries offered at various stages of education and experience. It was found that counselors had high levels of training in the districts investigated; that the bulk of districts offering relatively superior salaries sought and obtained the services of highly qualified persons; that inbreeding of counselors in such districts is rare; that the services of experienced counselors are sought by approximately half of the systems sampled; and that teacher training and/or experience are not necessarily prerequisite to employment in some one third of better paying districts. Involvement of practicing counselors in the screening of applicants for counseling positions was found to be uncommon.

This study sought to explore the use of the scored life history as a predictive index of a career commitment to school counseling. Hypotheses concerning the relationship between life history data and a career commitment to teaching and administration were also investigated. Multiple regression analysis was used to obtain validity coefficients estimating the relationship between weighted linear combinations of life history data and the career commitment criteria. The regression weights obtained for the most promising biographical predictors were used to predict current occupational titles for a cross‐validation sample. Statistical analysis of the data indicated that selected and empirically weighted life history materials are valid indices of counselor career commitment. For practical purposes, life history data for teaching and administration demonstrated a lack of consistent predictive power. In half a century, student personnel work has not achieved professional recognition on campuses. As evidence, basic literature is cited both quantitatively and qualitatively. Preoccupation with housekeeping functions remains a major reason for the field's low esteem. The personnel point of view provides an inadequate base for professional organization. Fragmentation into a growing number of specialties characterizes current developments. The early dreams of a profession of student personnel work cannot be realized.

摘要:
Role theory deals with the rights and obligations accruing to occupants of positions. Role expectations are mobilized by the credentials present in the style with which the role performer enacts his role. Expectations high school seniors have of these credentials in regard to parents, teachers, and counselors were investigated employing an instrument developed from' the dimensions of Empathy, Respect, Genuineness, and Concreteness posited by Carkhuff and Berenson. The findings were: (a) subjects of higher socioeconomic status had higher expectations of Respect from parents, teachers, and counselors; (b) subjects, in general, had higher expectations of Empathy, Respect, and Concreteness from counselors than from parents while the reverse held true for Genuineness; (c) girls had higher expectations of Respect from parents, teachers, and counselors than did boys.

Completed and on‐going research projects in the personnel services funded by the Office of Education were analyzed regarding the topics investigated, geographical area in which the research was being done, agencies receiving the grant, and the frequency of different research designs and statistical analyses. The analysis suggests that research in the personnel services is predominantly centered in the North Central accreditation region; is experimental in design and has an apparently growing programmatic emphasis; and, finally, is primarily concerned with college student populations. A number of questions are raised for consideration in the discussion and conclusion

This paper emphasizes the need to avoid the splintering of counselors into discrete kinds, separated by the settings in which they function. It also emphasizes the importance of the counseling function in the elementary school, a function now accepted as the major activity of counselors in other settings. A number of current issues on the functioning of counselors in elementary schools are considered, with suggestions for their resolution.
