School violence and vandalism are at crisis level. The investigators attempted to employ strategies that would attack identified procreators of school violence and vandalism existing within our schools. The effects of these strategies on vandalism costs, student attendance, off‐task and disruptive behaviors, and on various kinds of positive teacher‐student contacts were investigated in 19 elementary schools. Results indicated that the dollar costs of vandalism and frequency of inappropriate student behaviors decreased more in experimental than in control schools. Being assertive is not always sufficient. Assertiveness training models show shortcomings in those situations where assertiveness results in stalemates or conflicts, or both. Deadlocks may occur when antagonists demonstrate appropriate assertive behavior. Conflict management using problem‐solving skills allows individuals to learn appropriate methods of dealing with conflictual or competitive situations. This study describes and evaluates the first two years of a student counseling center in a Nigerian university. The study revealed that the counseling center was hampered by lack of space, lack of staff, and by the ignorance and suspicions of students and lecturers. The study also indicated that there was a great need to investigate various parameters of the counseling situation to determine their effects in the Nigerian milieu.

This article describes a men's CR program that encourages men to explore their ideas, feelings, and values in a noncompetitive and trusting atmosphere. An instrument for the analysis of verbal statements along a continuum from most intimate to least intimate is the Levels of Verbal Intimacy Technique (LOVIT). It enables an observer to place all verbal statements in one of ten categories along this intimacy continuum. The technique has been used in research on small groups and also can be used to provide feedback in groups, for example, to couples in marriage counseling.
